Weak Retail Sales Don't Necessarily Follow Weak Job Growth [view article]
Even with Bernanake's disasterous rate policy, I do not see another rate cut coming anytime soon, except as a knee-jerk response to some crisis out there that could happen at any time.

For me, the key part of your commentary was the last paragraph and I completely agree. I have not been following retail sales lately, but I suspected an overall discounting of bad economic data based on other things I have seen. But you confirmed my suspicions. Sentiment is key right now. Good job.

    Tough call.

I think the retail number is going to show more of what we've been seeing; that given the circumstances retail has kept up better than many expected but consumers are clearly strapped.

It barely got noticed last week when non-mortgage related consumer debt grew to $15.3 billion in March from $5.2 billion in February. A better than consensus number wouldn't surprise me but it'll mask

Wal-Mart: Another 20%-40% Upside in Store [view article]
well.....if the company supported America like they support China maybe that would all be so........but QUOTE***In China, as elsewhere, we follow the Wal-Mart tradition of building our business one store and one customer at a time. We strive to provide our customers with friendly service and a wide selection of quality products at Every Day Low Prices. With each Wal-Mart store we bring advanced retail know-how to the local market. By fostering a healthy, competitive environment, we hope to constantly improve our business operations and customer service in order to contribute to the prosperity of the local economy.

Wal-Mart firmly believes in local procurement. We recognize that by purchasing quality products, we can generate more job opportunities, support local manufacturing and boost economic development. Over 95% of the merchandise in our stores in China is sourced locally. We have established partnerships with nearly 20,000 suppliers in China. At Wal-Mart, we always work with our suppliers to grow together. In August 2007, Wal-Mart once again secured the top spot of the 2007 Supplier Satisfaction Survey conducted by Business Information of Shanghai. Additionally, Wal-Mart directly exports about US$9 billion from China every year. The export volume by third party suppliers is also estimated to be over US$9 billion.***end quote......and having Germany and South Korea kick their a!! out and the nice people of Japan not getting into Seiyu....duh! add to that the yuan value going up with the US dollar falling and the people of the World can't figure out why anything is going "UP".....maybe when they find the person that took the "hyphen" from the name and replaced it with a big single "star" that person will be glad to answer the question....are will they.

I agree with Simple Simon, the real competition in this space is a very short supply, and with it real innovation. Reply

Retail Sale - Cramer's Stop Trading! (5/8/08) [view article]
JIM you missed TNK. It's a new tanker company, low debt, and its parent is TK corp which manages 1/2 or more of the worlds spot market. Expect $3.40/eps compared to $1.80 estimates.

    It's a $30 stock trading at $21.40 today.

Re: "goggle eyes" and yoohoo, the world desperately needs some real competition in this amrekt place. Most of us have found that it is becoming increasingly problematic to find a useful website resulting from a tedious search. In part owing to the 'pay per click' advertising /get rich quick scheme' where if you expect your page to be viewed on the front page, you better be prepared to budget at least a grand or even several grand a month for the priveledge of beign "seen". A goggle/yoohoo merger might be a flash in the pan fast buck opp...but in the end, it will not help anyone. It will just provide us with scores of pages of useless webpages to scroll through to find something useful. And while I'm at it...ebay desperately needs a viable competitor. Seven billion a year gross for ebay, for a 'virtual store', with no real ovehead, is unconscionable. Of course, who cares about consciousness, or integrity, or true worth today? Let's just keep appointing our golf buddies to the board, who will approve a 20 million dollar severance package for us once we drive the corporation into bankruptcy. And damn the torpedoes...full speed ahead. Reply

Retail Replay: 'Resilient' Consumers? [view article]
    To cranky,

You're right about food inflation, and another thing: Like Costco, Sam's Club sells fuel. And I remember reading that nearly 40% of Costco's same-store sales growth arose from higher fuel revenue. Now it could mean that more people are buying gas there, but it could just as easily mean, as you said, that price inflation at the pump is driving revenue growth. What will be interesting is to see whether product volume is following revenue growth, or whether it's just another instance of consumers spending the same amount of money, but just more on fuel and food than on other things.

Gebby you are SO correct! "If it bleeds, it leads" mentality of the press has almost destroyed their readership. Mark Twain was right on the money when he said "To NOT read a newspaper is to be Uninformed, but to read them is to be Misinformed". Unfortunately the other media outlets are folloeing in the newspapers footsteps. Reply
