Does Buy-and-Hold Work on Major Blue Chips? [view article]
Before you whine about blue chip stocks going nowhere, you should first study how blue chips performed during the 1906-1921, the 1929-1949 and the 1966-1982 periods. And please don't forget dividends, PFE is paying more than 7% these days.

Will We See Retail Health Clinics in the U.K.? [view article]
The question is does anyone care. Retail clinics are a bad idea that succeed marginally because of the inefficiencies in the US system and the primary care shortage. Neither of these conditions exist in the UK. ReplyLehman's a Lemon - Fast Money Recap (6/9/08) [view article]

My goodness is it possible that I shot myself in my left foot buying GE, and Exxon Mobil got my right foot, down the years long gone by, and didn't feel any pain ? By my calculations, dividends and splits included, I am way ahead of the game. But this financial pundit says I am wrong. Hmmm!Sure beats me how unless I suffer from terminal dumbness.

Does Buy-and-Hold Work on Major Blue Chips? [view article]
Buy and Hold works great during long term bull markets. The last one started in 1981 and ended in 2000. If you bought and held during 1966-1980 period, you had about the same return as in 2000-2007. Dividends are OK, but if company pays 1.5% and stock doesn't grow, you're much better with CD (and much safer to boot). That's why index fund investing right now is plain stupid. Exclusion of dividends from stock charts is my pet peeve. It astounds me that more people don't notice/care. StockCharts.com is one of the few sources I know of that incorporates dividends into their charts. Yahoo can denote the dates and amounts of dividends, but you have to do the math, as opposed to seeing results visually. Mornigstar uses total return in their snapshot version, but I don't think you can compare two stocks or funds on the same graph. ReplyLehman's a Lemon - Fast Money Recap (6/9/08) [view article]
(Another) Great call by Najarian on TIE . I think it's ridiculous that CNBC allows him to "frontrun" his positions before he airs them on Fast Money without any constraints. Obviously, they recognize the conflicts of interest because they place constraints on others including Cramer. What do you want to bet that Pete won't say anything about TIE on today's show ?? did u take into account stock dividends and cash dividends and rights issues over the years? I did not study it yet, so you might have already, but that is an important consideration. ReplyDoes Buy-and-Hold Work on Major Blue Chips? [view article]
I find the article quite interesting but I am stuck with a portfolio of "blue" chips which have a reasonable payout. Most people who talk of "dead" money fail to account for the dividends. In addition, what does one do with mounds of cash? CE's pay nothing, bonds are for traders, stocks and real estate no longer provide a satisfactory return. Own a little of everything? ReplyDoes Buy-and-Hold Work on Major Blue Chips? [view article]
Without including dividends the chart means nothing-long term divvies comprise 40% or more of total return. ReplyAberration in Clear Thinking by JP Morgan [view article]

Aberration in Clear Thinking by JP Morgan [view article]
I have now been through 3 recessions and now I'm experiencing #4. I just love those who act as if this is the worst. Its not even close to the early 80's nor the early 90's, but is worse than 2000.None of these recessions ended until there were serioius, not 20%, pricing corrections in housing. The key note has always been the vacation spots particularly in condos. When you can buy a 250,000.00 condo in Myrtle Beach for 125,000.00 we will see the beginning of commerce once again. Until then, the jury is out on how bad this can get.
There are pockets where real estate building and sales are doing exceptionally well. I'm making 20 times more money than I ever have by moving 100 miles away from my home market. Its out there, you've just got to go find it. Reply
Fast Money Recap - Oil Spoils Everything (6/6/08) [view article]
It's a very excellent presentation on the hows and whys of the market right now, and overall this whole oil fiasco is killing us(Americans/Investors... Under the assumption that investors will invest regardless. Is renewable energy really the new frontier? ReplyAberration in Clear Thinking by JP Morgan [view article]
I shorted enough last year, but if you are shorting you are playing with fire. Can you imagine if even a single big bank reports that there will be some write ups of all the write downs that have been done, Dow could rally 1000 points that day alone. who cares about the economy, stocks are based on the earnings and corporations are in a great shape compared to 2000 and 1990. Time to go long, slowly that is, one piece at a time... ReplyAberration in Clear Thinking by JP Morgan [view article]
JP Morgan analyst makes a valid point that the surge is due to the schooyear ending in May, with all those high-school graduates technically becoming "unemployed"... What do you say? The second point he makes is that the rises in unemployment come at the end of the cycle, which is absolutely true... last time sky came crashing down in 1990, the unemployment peaked long after economy was already growing. Well, this time we dont know if it has peaked, really, maybe it will continue rising to 8% in the next year or so, but personally i dont believe it possibly could. Reply
