Nine Stocks Going Ex-Dividend in September [view article]
The author of this article should explain a little bit more on details concerning the above companies. Give an example of how it is done. GT is right, it might cost someone 25 cents trying to steal a dime. Especially for beginners. ReplyNine Stocks Going Ex-Dividend in September [view article]
GREAT IDEA. JUST DON'T LET YOUR BUY AND SELL COSTS EAT IT AND/OR YOU IN THE PROCESS.COMMENT BY: GT.

user155010.. and other folks who think Jim Rodgers is great? He has called for Frannie & Freddy to fail-uh should fail.., complaining that everyone has committed theft, fraud, etc. When ask by the interviewer if he was short these stocks he said of course. He stated yes he was making money being short but who cared if he was making money?? After all he said, "I have to pay taxes on it".. right!!
He spends his TV time bad mouthing the stocks so he can make his money short..a nice ethical guy.
just my view.. Reply

Eli keeps getting better. Between the headline news, the overnight foreign markets, the earnings reports, and the day's economic calendar, what more material could a reader want? One hopes that Eli doesn't get dragged into the trap of doing a lot of analysis. ReplyWall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [view article]

Electric cars are nice, but were is the electricity going to come from? FPL wants to build a solar farm in Martin County Fl at a cost of $660 mil. to supply electricity to 11,000 homes. That is an estimated pre construction cost of $60,000 per home!!Not to mention the cloud cover in Florida gives this project the look of a disaster in the making.
At these electricity costs $4.00 a gallon looks cheap.

Wilkinson's June 10th article mistakenly labels MEOH a "wood alcohol maker" such a mistake calls into question Wilkison's authority to be analyzing stocks such as MEOH. Methanol is produced by natural gas and not wood pulp. Crucial to analyzing this stock is knowledge of pricing and availability of Natural Gas and demand and pricing of Methanol. Moreover, a little knowledge of the consistent annual issuer bids of 10% over the last few years and the double digit dividend growth year over year are important too. Not to mention the quality of management. Reading the tea leaves of share price as an investment strategy is sure to wipe out virtually every dollar you have if you were lucky enough to have them in the first place. Moral of the story DON'T RELY ON WEB ARTICLES TO PURCHASE OR SELL STOCK. As the above illustrates, there it is more important why a stock ticks than how. and.... Wilkinson either take a chemistry lesson or write about something you have knowledge. - Just me... ReplyWall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [view article]
I don't know where the media gets the nation's gas prices. Around here it has been OVER $4.00 for some time and currently it is over$4.50 for Reg. We definitely need a BIG push for electric cars, the
hybrids that the big 3 are now pushing are just a stop-gap for THEM.

Is this a buy or a sell? ReplyFive Solid Financial Stocks [view article]
On 1/14/08, I bought calls of Wells Fargo (WFC) for February at $30 and April at $35. The stock was selling for $28.21 at the time. ReplyA General Insurance Brokers Story [view article]
Price-to-Book is a problem in comparing insurance brokers because of the differences between those who are in acquisition mode (lots of intangible assets) and those who are more reliant on internal growth (no so much intangile assets). Debt, if used, tends to be short term (5-7 years)Net income is similarly a problem versus EBITDA, because those in acquisition mode using debt, have lower net income than those who are not acquiring or those using stock in an anti-dilutive way.
They all have similar potential for gross margins (15% to 20% generally) but at various times those margins are up or down. That can make price-to-sales a reasonable yardstick for longer term value comparison than current or trailing P/E.
You can certainly look at P/B, but we think P/S, EV/EBITDA are better comparison tools most of the time.
We like MMC too as a speculation on the sale of Putnam Funds. AOC was left out of our study, because they have so much risk assumption. Reply

This group has gone through many interesting periods in the last five to ten years, with unusual opportunities to profit from "growth' (in the case of AJG in the Nineties, and BRO forever), MMC (growth in the Nineties, restructuring/blowoff in 2006), AOC (transition in 2003-2005) and WSH (good consistent player). How do things stand now? The way I see it, nice business, and they probably offer some downside protection (versus banks, p/c insurers, Investment banks), but each individual stock has its own set of problems/challenges. And why not look at price/book; It is a measure of risk, since if they don't produce expected returns on intellectual capital (i.e. intangibles), it should be viewed with some skepticism as to the reliability of the cash flow. My personal favorite is AJG (after runup in MMC, the rich valuation for BRO, AOC alreday at fair value), and the market seems to be recognizing the growth vehicles, nice ROE and free cash flow, and reasonable valuation Reply
