Weyerhaeuser Co. (WY)

The slowdown in China's economic growth may not be the only reason behind a rapid decline of U.S. lumber exports as well as a big drop in shares of timber REITs like PCH and PCL and forest product firms such as WY. Another reason: U.S. wood, whose prices are up 27% YTD, is no longer a bargain, which could mean a better year for the timber business than investors suspect.

Weyerhaeuser (WY +4.2%) trades up in relief after its Q4 beats consensus estimates despite a 62% Y/Y drop in earnings on slowing sales and write-downs. Wood products - the company's biggest segment by sales - saw revenue decline 14% Q/Q, while its loss from continuing operations also widened sequentially, but the hit was not as great as anticipated.

SA author Bear Fight makes the case for timber stocks - pointing to the sector's low correlation to other asset classes and the ability for investors to hedge against inflation. Another intriguing feature in an era of low interest rates, timber companies can offer steady dividends (3%-4%) by buying land with different maturity dates. Favorite sector picks: RYN, PCL, PCH, WY.

Markets sniff out weakness, and the relentless selling in financials may be no more than frontrunning John Paulson, whose Advantage Plus fund is reportedly off 47% through September's end. Redemptions - perhaps massive ones - are a possibility, meaning Paulson will have to unload financial shares, and others, he has been so fond of. One could do worse than picking a bottom in the XLF on the day he is forced to give up on the sector.
