Blue Ridge Capital - Portfolio Holdings [view article]
It's not rocket science to present a portfolio that contains Google and Apple when these two companies provide 85% of the growth making fund managers appear market-savvy. It doesn't require that your manager works out of a luxurious office in a Manhattan skyscraper either. That YOUR money pays for. The technique is plain vanilla deception no matter how you spin it. ReplyBiotech Stocks' Various Lupus Therapies: Opportunity or Lost Cause? [view article]
It is so sad that there are so few drugs to treat Lupus, and there is no cure. My daughter-in-law has Lupus and would absolutely love to have a baby, but without treatment her Lupus acts up. She was diagnosed in college when she had a major "flare", and even though she is a healthcare professional, she cannot find an adequate treatment. Replyt

BTW, M* Portfolio Manager now shows 3 years standard deviation of a portfolio. It also shows Expected Annual Return in the Asset Allocator (AA) tool. When I entered Geoff's "modified David Swensen's" allocation into these M* tools I got the three years SD at 11.45, same as Geoff got from the QPP. However, the expected annual return at the AA tool shows 7.5% vs. Geoff's at about 10% for the next three years. It would be interesting to wait and see which is right. M* AA also shows a possible 3 month loss of 10.3%, for this allocation (from today). ReplyGlobal Giants and Diversifiers To Supercharge a Portfolio [view article]

It's not about the plaques, which are endgame in this disease, it is about the toxic building blocks of plaques, Abeta oligomers, that impair neurotransmission. Beta-secretase inhibtors should lower Abeta oligomer levels. The caveat is that the beta-secretase enzyme also cleaves other substrates and one would not want to interfere with these normal and vital processes. Thus, the safety of this drug is not guaranteed, by a long shot. Agents that block Abeta from forming toxic oligomers, e.g. Prana Biotechnology's PBT2, are more attractive in this regard. Another viable alternative are gamma-secretase modulators, e.g. Eisai's E2012, that do not block normal enzyme function. Time will tell... ReplyWall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [view article]

Slowing growth is what management is talking about which in return should eventually reduce the P/E multiple. In order to maintain a 35/40 multiple, there can NOT be any signs of weakness as we are seeing now.
The 50+% boost from BBI's demise was overdone.
Toudo.com and YOUKU (free Chinese sites) are still free and when they start charging customers (and pay royalties) they will not only be legitimate competition but will cost less than NFLX. Their cost structure is lower and are willing to work on smaller margins.
AMZN and AAPL don't have the traffic that these two have outside the U.S.... also, both are upgrading their servers for faster on-line streaming (no need to download).
It is beginning to look like a five-way-horse-race, assuming BBI gives up altogether.

Wyeth's Alzheimer's Vaccine Could Become World's #1 Drug - Barron's [view article]
cack211 -- very sorry about your loss. I indeed hope this, or something like it, is the breakthrough that so many are waiting for.Having said that, I don't think discussions of the therapeutic and commercial benefits of new medicines are mutually exclusive. If all the medicines waiting to be discovered were to have to wait for massive charitable donations alone before they were discovered, I daresay the wait would be a whole lot longer. The fact commercial interests can make big money from breakthrough medicines is no doubt an impetus for their discovery and development, and as such I think the discussion thereof is healthy and should be facilitated. Wyeth's Alzheimer's Vaccine Could Become World's #1 Drug - Barron's [view article]
My husband passed away a few weeks ago after years of wasting away from the effects of Alzheimer's Disease. Those who talk only about stock benefits and the business angle have never watched someone they love die a minute at a time, not understanding why they can't think, can't remember, can't concentrate. A drug that could potentially reverse some of that, and relieve the anguish for the patient and for the family - deserve to be the only story. The billions for Wyeth are nice, but how wonderful it will be for future patients to get some of their lives back! I would have given anything to have had this opportunity for my husband! China Biotech Week in Review: News on All Fronts [view article]
I would rate it a buy here. WYETH just gave up a key piece of information in that it can take 9 months to get a permit in China to create an R&D facility within the PRC. That as opposed to 30 days for permits in US & Europe. Given the economic gains (essentially cost savings) and workforce available not to mention the access to Chinese proprietary remedies it seems to me there is tremendous room for continued growth.WX is building more and new facilties Wyeth will increase CRO outsourcing from 25% to 30%, Pfizer and others which need to develop a fatter pipeline of products need the same economy of scale for R&D.
Despite lofty valuations, I am confident this is a long term hold with great potential. I have a healthy position about to get larger at these prices. I recently bought trading shares and cashed them in on the last dip. The break below 19 gives us another opportunity.
