It may be time for investors to dust off their copy of Ben Graham and David Dodd's classic Security Analysis. Graham and Dodd paid a lot of attention to the liquidation value of companies as a way of lowering the risk of loss even under a worst-case scenario. They reasoned that even if a company fails as a going concern and is forced to liquidate, shareholders may get their money back -- or even make money -- assuming the company's balance sheet is strong and liquid enough to yield a material amount of cash for shareholders in the event of a liquidation of all of the company's assets.

The Financial Times argues in an article entitled "Liquidation risk grows as finance dries up" that liquidations -- rather than reorganizations under Chapter 11 -- may become more common as bankruptcy financing disappears or becomes prohibitively expensive. According to the FT,

Webzen (WZEN) is a Korean video game developer and publisher specializing in Massively Multi-player Online Games [MMOG]. Its games are played in China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, the U.S. and Vietnam.

Unfortunately, Webzen hasn’t lived up to its hype. From its high of $12.68 in 2004, Webzen has dropped to its current price of $3.39. Its only real success to date has been MU, a MMOG released in 2003. The company’s newest MMOG, Soul Ultimate Nation, has been underwhelming with game revenues already decreasing… Company revenues have actually decreased both domestically and overseas and net income was negative in both 2006 and 2007.

Ten International Growth Stocks To Consider Buying

Faisal Laljee submits: The overseas markets in Brazil, China, Russia and even Norway have primarily grown due to the strong demand for commodities. Companies formerly unknown to us are now household names. Indeed the likes of Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (RIO), BHP Billiton Limited (BHP), PetroChina (PTR), Rio Tinto (RTP), Statoil (STO) and others have seen gigantic returns over the last 3 years, and by most accounts, the run is not over.
While it would be much easier to write and recommend such stocks, I want to shy away as much as possible from these names, in order to keep this post both interesting and profitable for readers. Additionally, I have also tried to stay away from listing banks in emerging markets.

As countries like India, China, Poland, Chile and Vietnam (among others) mature financially, the banks in all these markets should do well with the increasing popularity of financing, mortgages and credit cards, increased consumer wealth and spending, appreciating local currencies and higher foreign investment.

Though I am hesitant on the prospects of China to keep up its tepid growth, value is value, and cash is cash.

Korean online video game producer Webzen (WZEN) is getting pretty cheap these days and I have decided to bite. The company has produced a number of online games, with flagship MU having been a hit a couple of years ago. Their fortunes have taken a turn for the worse lately but this is over-reflected in the current stock price. The company is currently selling for just over book value, and in spite of this is in no danger of bankruptcy for at least a few years. All it will take is one successful offering and the price will soar.
