- Thursday, January 19, 2012, 11:30 AM Market internals continue to favor beta and an uptrend given that financials (XLF) are performing well, bonds (TLT) are dropping, and defensive sectors such as utilities (XLU), healthcare (XLV), and consumer staples (XLP) are significantly underperforming the S&P 500. Animal spirits appear to be returning in a very real way despite continued investor skepticism that the bull may be charging ahead. (submitted by Michael Gayed) Comment!
- Wednesday, December 21, 2011, 11:56 AM Jeff Reeves warns that "your worst investments in 2012 could be some big dividend names you've been fooled into thinking are safe." While utilities, for example, provide guaranteed revenues and dividends, the upside "has already been had." As an alternative, Hershey (HSY) could see growth if the broader economy turns a corner. 1 Comment [Quick Ideas]
- Saturday, November 12, 2011, 7:55 AM Few world stock markets escaped the Italian mood on Wednesday, then they all rose in unison toward the end of the week - though correlation is actually less strong now than a few years ago. That doesn't mean that markets will stop moving in lockstep, and one way to protect against contagion: utilities that aren't as vulnerable to dollar, inflation or interest risks. Comment! [Quick Ideas]
- Friday, September 30, 2011, 5:36 PM It's tempting to point to Europe for market troubles, but a look at sector performance today paints a more conventional picture of economic gloom: Among the 10 S&P sectors, cyclical ETFs were worst (XLB, -3.7%; XLI, -3.3%; XLF, -3.5%), while defensives did best (meaning, less poorly: XLV, -1.3%; XLP, -1%; XLU, -1.1%). Comment! [U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, September 28, 2011, 5:29 PM Morgan Stanley's analysis of sector performance during the market's recent turmoil found there was no better safe haven for equity investors than utilies - utility ETF XLU is roughly even since the start of August, compared with a 10%+ drop for the S&P 500. Entergy (ETR) is Morgan Stanley's favorite name in the space. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, August 25, 2010, 5:46 PM Wednesday's Sector ETF Performance: Best -- Consumer Discretionary (XLY) + 1.0%, Healthcare (XLV) +1.0%, Tech (XLK) +0.6%. Worst -- Energy (XLE) -0.3%, Industrials (XLI) -0.2%, Utilities (XLU) -0.1%. Comment!
- Thursday, June 24, 2010, 3:57 PM Utility stocks are the top performers of the past month, finding new fans among income investors as the 10-year Treasury approaches 3%. The three biggest holdings in the utilities ETF - Southern (SO), Exelon (EXC) and Dominion Resources (D) - boast dividend yields near 5%, which means utilities are 35% undervalued relative to government bonds, a Barclays analyst says.
