- Wednesday, March 20, 8:52 AM Statoil (STO) will move forward with the NOK3.5B ($600M) development of the Smorbukk South Extension project as a subsea satellite to the Aasgard field in the Norwegian Sea. STO plans to exploit recoverable resources of 16.5M boe at the discovery; production is expected to start in Q3 2015. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Monday, March 18, 3:42 PM Imperial Oil (IMO) expects its C$12.9B Kearl oil sands project to begin operating within the next two weeks, more than three months past its original target, but it cannot yet say how much oil the plant will initially produce. Kearl, co-owned with Exxon Mobil (XOM), eventually will produce 110K bbl/day from its initial stage, with subsequent expansions slated to push output to 345K. 2 Comments [Energy]
- Monday, March 18, 8:27 AM Statoil (STO) and partner Exxon Mobil (XOM) announce their third discovery above 250M boe/year in Block 2 offshore Tanzania. The mounting volume of gas discoveries off the coast of East Africa has stimulated a wave of interest in the region, culminating in China National Petroleum's $4.2B deal last week for 20% of Eni's (E) giant Mozambique offshore field. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, March 15, 3:52 PM Top operators of Norwegian gas fields criticize a government proposal to cut tariffs on gas transport for new contracts, even though the policy was suggested to help their exploration activities. The firms want assurances of future investment in pipeline infrastructure, and fear lower tariffs could slow the opening of some fields off Norway. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Thursday, March 14, 3:29 PM Anadarko (APC +1.3%) has held early-stage talks with Exxon (XOM) and Shell (RDS.A) about selling a share of its natural gas discoveries offshore Mozambique, a top government official says. Although APC and Eni (E) plan to jointly develop an LNG plant there, neither has much experience with building and operating such costly plants; XOM and Shell are two of the world's top LNG investors and shippers. Comment! [Energy]
- Wednesday, March 13, 5:18 PM Exxon Mobil (XOM) envisions North America as an energy exporter by ~2025, as oil and natural gas output rises 45% by 2040 while U.S. energy consumption drops ~5% thanks to transportation efficiency gains. Increased reliance on natural gas and renewables such as wind will lead to a 25% reduction in carbon emissions by 2040 to the lowest levels since the 1970s. 3 Comments [Energy, U.S. Economy]
- Tuesday, March 12, 10:17 AM Strategas analyst Daniel Clifton sees a better than 50% chance the Keystone pipeline (TRP) will be approved by late summer, and he thinks seven stocks will benefit directly or indirectly: CNQ, COP, DE, XOM, LYB, PWR and VLO - companies which already are doing well, and adding incremental revenue from Keystone should only help to improve their top and bottom lines. 6 Comments [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, March 11, 9:52 AM Exxon Mobil (XOM -0.3%) says it has started production from the Telok natural gas field, located offshore Malaysia in the South China Sea. The Telok A platform is the first phase of the Telok natural gas project, which will consist of two four-legged unmanned gas satellite platforms; a total of 14 development wells are planned. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, March 8, 5:25 PM ExxonMobil (XOM) says its $600M foray into creating motor fuels from algae may not succeed for at least another 25 years because of technical hurdles. Scientists have not yet been able to develop a strain of algae that reproduces quickly enough and behaves in a manner that would produce enough raw material to supply a refinery. 3 Comments [Energy]
- Friday, March 8, 2:29 PM Abu Dhabi invites several major oil firms to place bids to operate some of the country’s largest fields. The 75-year-old concession, which expires at the end of the year and produces 1.5M bbl/day, is one of few top-producing areas in the Persian Gulf where international companies are able to hold an ownership stake. Among new invitees: CVX, OXY. BP, XOM, TOT and RDS.A currently split a 40% stake. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Thursday, March 7, 9:54 AM Exxon's (XOM) Rex Tillerson predicts global energy demand will grow 35% by 2040, a view broadly shared by BP's Bob Dudley. But producing oil from unconventional sources can cost as much as $50-$75 a barrel, and even higher deep offshore. That's the challenge ahead; even Tillerson says he never expected to spend an expected $38B/year through 2017 to get just a 2%-3% uptick in annual production. 5 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, March 7, 4:22 AM Exxon Mobil (XOM) has renewed it attempt to reduce its 60% stake in Hong Kong utility Castle Peak Power by launching an auction for a 30% holding in a deal that could bring in up to $2B. Last year, the company tried and failed to sell the whole stake to CLP Holdings - which owns the other 40% of Castle Peak - and China Southern Power Grid. 1 Comment [Energy, M&A]
- Wednesday, March 6, 3:13 PM Rosneft (RNFTF.PK) subsidiary Neftegaz acquires a 30% interest in 20 deepwater exploration blocks in the Gulf of Mexico held by ExxonMobil (XOM). XOM retains 70% interest and remains operator; analysis of seismic data is under way, and there is not yet any production on the blocks. Financial terms are not disclosed. (PR) 2 Comments [Energy]
- Wednesday, March 6, 9:44 AM Exxon Mobil (XOM -0.3%) anticipates major project start-ups will deliver 1M oil-equivalent barrels over the next five years, CEO Rex Tillerson tells analysts. Output of crude oil and other liquids is expected to increase by an average 4%/year in 2013-17, as the production starts at 28 major projects. XOM plans to invest ~$190B over the next five years to meet growing energy demand. 3 Comments [Energy]
- Wednesday, March 6, 3:34 AM Myanmar reportedly won't force foreign energy companies to join up with local partners in an auction of offshore oil and gas blocks that are due to take place in April. Overseas firms were required to take Burmese partners for onshore assets, which may have put the foreign companies off. Those eying the offshore blocks include Shell (RDS.A), Chevron (CVX), ConocoPhillips (COP) and Exxon Mobil (XOM). Comment! [Energy]
- Tuesday, March 5, 12:44 PM PetroChina (PTR) says it would be willing to join Exxon Mobil (XOM) in Iraq's giant West Qurna-1 oilfield project, which could see China come to dominate Iraq's oilfields while helping XOM mend fences with the Baghdad government. XOM is setting up a range of options that could keep it in the country, including the possibility of selling just part of its 60% stake in West Qurna-1 to PTR. 1 Comment [Energy, Global & FX]
