- Wednesday, November 24, 2010, 1:35 PM With the much-hyped holiday shopping season starting earlier and ending later every year, Black Friday's sales results just don't mean as much as they used to. 1 Comment
- Wednesday, November 24, 2010, 12:02 PM With e-commerce spending expected to rise 11% this holiday season, investors are giving Amazon (AMZN) a vote of confidence and a hefty bounce ahead of Black Friday. Shares +4.9%. Other retail gainers: EBAY +2.7%. OSTK +4.4%. TGT +3%. 2 Comments
- Wednesday, November 24, 2010, 8:12 AM Retailers obviously think free shipping is this season's silver bullet, as Home Depot (HD) joins a growing list of chains offering free delivery on thousands of products. Comment!
- Tuesday, November 23, 2010, 9:13 AM Redbook Chain Store Sales: +2.5% Y/Y vs. +2.7% last week. The report claims shoppers are holding off ahead of Black Friday promotions. Comment!
- Tuesday, November 23, 2010, 8:09 AM ICSC Retail Store Sales: -0.6% W/W, vs. -0.1% last week. +2.8% Y/Y, vs. +3.4% last week. A pre-holiday lull ahead of Black Friday prompted the W/W decline, but the report still sees strong growth of +3-4% Y/Y. Comment!
- Thursday, November 18, 2010, 8:08 AM As many as 138M U.S. shoppers could hit the stores next week looking for Black Friday bargains, according to today's survey by the National Retail Federation. That's 4M more than last year's forecast, and a positive sign for retailers who count on Black Friday sales to kick off the holiday shopping season. 5 Comments
- Tuesday, November 16, 2010, 10:19 AM The rise in cotton prices has been 'terrifying' and could force U.S. retailers like Gap (GPS), J.C. Penney (JCP) and Wal-Mart (WMT) to pay their Chinese suppliers as much as 30% more for clothes. The price hikes, unsurprisingly, will probably be passed along to consumers. 2 Comments
- Tuesday, November 16, 2010, 9:14 AM Redbook Chain Store Sales: +2.7% Y/Y vs. +2.6% last week. Sales have been steady so far this month, but are up only 0.1% M/M. (see also: ICSC sales) Comment!
- Tuesday, November 16, 2010, 8:03 AM ICSC Retail Store Sales: -0.1% W/W, vs. +1.3% last week. +3.4% Y/Y, unchanged from last week. Despite the slight dip in weekly sales, ICSC forecasts a strong month, and expects the full-month Y/Y gain to come in at 4-5%. 1 Comment

Good news for both temps and the retail sector: Amazon (AMZN) is hiring 15,500 workers to fill temporary holiday jobs at shipping centers around the country. Other retailers (like KSS, M, PIR, AEO) are also increasing temporary hires, and are expected to add a total of 550K-650K jobs this holiday season.
13 Comments - Tuesday, November 9, 2010, 9:17 AM Redbook Chain Store Sales: +2.6% Y/Y vs. +2.5% last week. While cold weather contributed to a surge in ICSC sales, Redbook says public focus on mid-term elections restrained shopping. Comment!
- Tuesday, November 9, 2010, 8:26 AM ICSC Retail Store Sales: +1.3% W/W, vs. +0.1% last week. +3.4% Y/Y, vs. +2% last week. The strong showing was helped by cold weather which drove demand for seasonal goods. Full month sales are expected to show a solid 3-4% gain Y/Y. Comment!
- Thursday, October 7, 2010, 10:08 AM Retail stocks (ETF: XRT) outperform the broader market following better-than-expected September same-store sales. BKE +9.5%, ANF +8.9%, AEO +8.6%, LTD +4%, DDS +0.8%, M +0.1%. (chart) Comment!
- Thursday, August 5, 2010, 3:55 PM Worse-than-expected July retail sales foreshadow a "slow, painful back-to-school season," analysts say, and shoppers are holding out to see whether stores will cut prices further. "The second of half of the year is where the reality is setting in," as retailers will face more difficult comparisons with a year ago and consumers keep spending in check. (ETF: XRT) Comment!
- Tuesday, July 27, 2010, 10:02 AM July Consumer Confidence Index: 50.4 vs. 50.8 expected and 52.9 prior. Present situation 26.1, vs. 25.5 prior. Expectations 66.6 vs. 71.2 prior. "Consumer confidence faded further in July as consumers continue to grow increasingly more pessimistic about the short-term outlook... retailers are very likely to face a challenging back-to-school season.” 3 Comments
- Wednesday, July 7, 2010, 8:52 AM Shopping center vacancies continued to rise in Q2, inching up to 9% from 8.9% in Q1, research firm Reis said. The pace of the deterioration appears to be slowing, but it may take until 2012 to see a recovery, and until 2016 for vacancy rates to fall to their pre-crisis lows. 1 Comment
