- Friday, May 10, 12:32 PM A number of retailers are seeing some speculative buying after True Religion TRLG lands a takeover offer and Gap puts in a powerhouse month for sales to help lift sentiment. The S&P Retail ETF (XRT) is up 1.1%, but might be doing better on the day if not for its heavy weighting currently into drugstore and grocery stocks. Gainers: FNP +4.1%, JOEZ +2.3%, VFC +1.5%, JNY +1.9%, GES +2.1%, APP +2.2%, BKE +1.5%. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 18, 12:30 PM Department store chains are trading weak with weak economic indicators and chatter on weak sales trends at Wal-Mart (WMT -1.5%) swaying sentiment. The sector is already a bit jitterish with Target's (TGT -0.9%) Q1 sales warnings from earlier in the week still resonating. Decliners include Sears Holdings (SHLD -2.5%), Nordstrom (JWN -1.4%), Saks (SKS -1.6%), and Macy's (M -1.2%) - while Fred's (FRED +0.1%) and J.C. Penney (JCP +1.6%) are bucking the trend. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, February 15, 2:41 PM The XLP, XRT, and XLY all give up gains and turn lower following Wal-Mart sounding the warning over the effects of the payroll tax hike. It's fascinating that it took markets until just now to react to what was crystal clear 6 weeks ago. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 10, 8:39 AM Retail analysts start to get a little edgy after an early round of reports on holiday sales (Aeropostale, Tiffany, Ascena Retail Group) show considerable weakness in consumer spending. It's still early in the reporting season, but the early tone flowing out from the sector doesn't bode well for retail-focused ETFs such as XRT, XLY, PMR, and RTH. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 26, 2012, 12:34 PM Many retail stocks are diving after MasterCard and ShopperTrak release data indicating holiday season sales were light. SHLD -3.6%. GPS -3%. NKE -2.9%. M -2.6%. GME -3.2%. AEO -3.6%. LTD -2.7%. ARO -3.4%. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 8:21 AM Holiday season warning for retail? The three heavyweight retailers to report November same-store sales all came in with disappointing marks. While Macy's and Target actually saw sales slip during the month, Gap showed a positive reading below expectations. The quick buzz from analysts is that a deeper trend than just a bump in the road from Hurricane Sandy could be in play. GPS -2.4%, TGT -2.9%, M -2.8%. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, July 5, 2012, 10:26 AM The retail sector (XRT +0.5%) ratchets higher after the dust settles from a flood of June sales reports. Investor favorites of the day include Limited (LTD +5.5%) and TJX Companies (TJX +3.5%), with both companies raising their profit outlooks (I, II). Kohl's (KSS +5.3%) is showing surprising strength off its sales miss, but a comment from the department store operator tipping off that sales trends improved over the course over the month is holding sway Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 1, 2012, 11:02 AM February retail sales beat expectations across the board, with the 18 retailers (XRT +1%) reporting results posting 6.4% Y/Y growth, vs. 4.8% consensus. Gap (GPS +7.8%) shook off its long slide to post 4% growth in same-store sales. Kroger (KR +2.2%) beat estimates and offered a strong 2012 outlook. Target (TGT -0.4%) same-store sales grew 7%, but it didn't raise guidance. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 5, 2012, 10:20 AM Retailers (XRT -1.5%) are the weakest sector in early trading after many companies cut guidance following disappointing holiday sales figures, as the highly promotional environment weighs on margins. JCP -6.5%, TGT -3.7% and PLCE -10% are among stores cutting their Q4 outlooks (I, II, III). Also lower: COST -1.8%, GPS -5.7%. But ROST +2.7% after raising guidance. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 3, 2012, 10:33 AM VF Corp. (VFC +3.1%) jumps after Citigroup upgrades the stock to Buy from Neutral, hikes the price target to $157 from $137 and adds it to the firm's "top picks live" list. Citi cites "strong brands" and "secular growth opportunities" within the company's outdoor segment, plus wider margins as cotton prices come down next year. XRT +1.3%. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, November 28, 2011, 10:05 AM Investors in retailers choose to accentuate the positive and eliminate any potential negative, as retail stocks (XRT +3.9%) post major moves in the early going. Among the notable gainers: AEO +5.2%, ANF +4.6%, BBY +4.2%, TIF +5.6%, AMZN +5.3%, JCP +3.5%, KSS +2.4%, TGT +2.3%, WMT +1.4%. Comment! [Consumer, U.S. Economy, On the Move]
- Monday, October 24, 2011, 1:25 PM Shares of retail stores (XRT +3%) enjoy a boost from FedEx's (FDX +2.8%) forecast of record holiday shipments. FedEx expects to ship 17M packages, a 10% rise Y/Y, and overall retail sales to rise 2.5%-3% this holiday season. Leading today's charge is JC Penney (JCP +3.7%), named a top pick last week at T2 Partners; also ANN +3.3%, M +4.7%, OMX +9%. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
