- Monday, May 20, 12:15 PM Facebook (FB -2.1%) slides after Yahoo (YHOO +1.3%) confirms it's buying social blogging leader Tumblr, which (like Twitter) is arguably a threat to Facebook's engagement levels. In spite of its focus on personal networks, Facebook has been trying to encroach on Tumblr's turf via its support for "public" posts that can be followed by anyone. However, uptake has largely been driven by media figures, rather than regular users. In paying $1.1B for Tumblr, Yahoo is betting the platform's social features and network effects will let it become the Twitter of longer-form material. If this happens, and Tumblr isn't simply viewed as another blogging platform, the price tag could look cheap. (previous) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Monday, May 20, 8:13 AM Yahoo (YHOO) confirms its deal to acquire Tumblr for $1.1B in cash. "Per the agreement and our promise not to screw it up, Tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business. David Karp will remain CEO." Yahoo expects the combination to grow its audience by 50% and grow traffic by 20%. Up earlier, Yahoo now off 1% premarket. (PR) 4 Comments [Breaking News, Tech, M&A]
- Monday, May 20, 7:57 AM Yahoo (YHOO) +1.4% premarket following its reported deal to buy Tumblr for $1.1B in cash. It's hard to justify at the current price, opinies Jefferies, noting Tumblr barely generates any revenue. Meanwhile, WordPress CEO Matt Mullenweg says defections from Tumblr to his site have soared, maybe thanks to Yahoo's history of shutting down past acquisitions like Geocities, Broadcast.com, and Del.icio.us. Comment! [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Sunday, May 19, 1:49 PM More on Yahoo/Tumblr: Kara Swisher reports Tumblr founder/CEO David Karp "will stay at Yahoo for four years at least and retain much control over the service." There are concerns about how Yahoo will deal with Tumblr's mountains of adult content without alienating either users or advertisers; Peter Kafka argues they're overblown, since marketers decide which blogs to advertise on. Discussing comparisons between Tumblr and Yahoo's failed 1999 acquisition of Geocities, Tristan Louis notes Tumblr has seen top execs jump ship. But he adds Geocities faltered in part because a flood of ads drove users away; Tumblr seems to be avoiding that pitfall. 6 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Sunday, May 19, 12:25 PM Yahoo's (YHOO) board has approved a $1.1B all-cash deal to acquire Tumblr, the WSJ reports. (previous) 24 Comments [Tech, M&A, Breaking News]
- Friday, May 17, 4:17 PM More on Yahoo/Tumblr: Forbes' Jeff Bercovici reports talks are "proceeding rapidly and likely to result in an offer" as soon as Marissa Mayer can get board approval. He adds Mayer would prefer an acquisition over some other kind of deal, and is trying to allay Tumblr CEO David Karp's fears of being "absorbed into a behemoth." Tumblr is also said to have held talks with Facebook and Microsoft, but a lockup agreement with Yahoo makes them irrelevant. BI's Nicholas Carlson observes Tumblr sources who were happy to talk with him 3 weeks ago have gone silent. 2 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, May 16, 11:56 PM Yahoo (YHOO) is in "serious talks" to buy social blogging service Tumblr for as much as $1B, multiple sources tell AdWeek. Kara Swisher also reports talks are happening, but is more circumspect, stating they could result in a partnership, investment, acquisition, or nothing at all. Tumblr, which claims 100M+ blogs and (as of Nov.) ~170M monthly visitors (up over 3x from Jan.), would give Yahoo a big source of user-generated content to integrate and monetize, and would strengthen its mobile presence. It would also (as Swisher notes) mesh with Yahoo's efforts to win back younger Web users. 9 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, May 10, 5:41 PM Another day, another Yahoo (YHOO) acqui-hire is announced. The target this time is mobile game developer Loki Studios, whose engineering team will be joining Yahoo. Surveying the non-stop purchases, Pando Daily's Erin Griffith declares Yahoo has become "a safe haven for VC rejects." Specifically, consumer-facing startups featuring "talented teams of fewer than 10 employees," but which lack "any truly notable traction," and have been unable to obtain a Series A funding round. (yesterday) 5 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, May 9, 2:02 PM Yahoo (YHOO -0.1%) makes two more talent/tech acquisitions. One is flight search/reward point-tracking startup Milewise, reported last week to be nearing a deal with Yahoo. The other is online polling service/app developer GoPollGo. As is Yahoo's custom, both startups' services are being shuttered. GoPollGo is being acquired by Yahoo's mobile unit in particular, which suggests its tech will soon be used in Yahoo's iOS/Android apps. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, May 7, 9:19 PM Marissa Mayer (YHOO) held a preliminary talk with Hulu (DIS, CMCSA, NWS) execs about a bid for the video site, "numerous sources" tell Kara Swisher. Amazon (AMZN), Guggenheim Partners, and ex-News Corp. COO Peter Chermin (previous) are also said to be weighing bids. Yahoo was one of the companies offering to buy Hulu back in 2011, and with the French government having thwarted its Dailymotion bid, Hulu and its 4M+ premium subs might not be a bad backup plan. But much likely depends on the content rights Hulu's risk-averse old media owners are willing to give. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, Consumer]
- Thursday, May 2, 7:08 PM Yahoo (YHOO) is reportedly close to acquiring Milewise, creator of a site and iOS/Android apps that allow users to track loyalty/reward points and search for flights and hotels on which they can be used. Milewise, which competes to an extent with (Priceline-owned) Kayak, Hipmunk, and Google's Flight Search, seems to fit well with Yahoo's strategy of growing its mobile footprint via small acquisitions and internal app development (sometimes leveraging technology from the acquisitions). (Astrid deal) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, April 29, 10:36 PM The French government has reportedly scuttled Yahoo's (YHOO) attempt to buy a $200M controlling stake in video site Dailymotion from France Telecom (FTE). A source tells TechCrunch French minister Arnaud Montebourg opposed the deal out of an unwillingness to let a "marquee" French tech company be under foreign control. Dailymotion is now expected to try and raise fresh capital (apparently FTE's plan before the Yahoo bid) in an attempt to hold its own against 800-lb. gorilla YouTube. Will Yahoo now go after another video site in an effort to obtain content and ad inventory? (previous) 2 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, April 10, 4:20 PM Yahoo's (YHOO +1.6%) $30M acquisition of Summly, criticized by more than a few writers for being a PR-driven move, included "the acquisition of IP, code, and technology" from SRI International (provider of the language-processing tech behind Summly), a source tells BI. The source adds Yahoo plans to use summarization tech to create "personalized news feeds" for mobile version of top Yahoo properties, and that the company is internally calling Summly "Yahoo's Siri." If true, the report goes a long way towards explaining the deal. (Yahoo/Apple) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, March 27, 9:44 AM Yahoo's (YHOO) acquisition of Dailymotion (previous) and its considerable video ad inventory from France Telecom (FTE) "is as good as done," two sources separately tell BI. Another source claims the purchase is part of a strategy to lower Yahoo's original content costs, acquire user-generated content, and focus on personalized consumption. One departed Yahoo exec isn't crazy about it. "Marissa may be a product genius, but Yahoo ... is an ads-for-content company, and she has shown no sign of recognizing that or valuing the profitable, good content businesses" 3 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, March 25, 12:14 PM Yahoo (YHOO) paid $30M - 90% in cash, 10% in stock - to acquire Summly, several sources tell Kara Swisher. On source suggests reeling in founder Nick D'Aloisio was a big part of Yahoo's motivation in buying the startup. "Nick will be a great person to put in front of the media and consumers with Mayer to make Yahoo seem like it is a place that loves both entrepreneurs and mobile experiences, which in turn will presumably attract others like him." 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, March 25, 9:24 AM Yahoo (YHOO) acquires popular news reader app Summly, along with 17-year-old founder Nick D'Aloisio. Kara Swisher reported of Yahoo's interest in the U.K.-based startup back in December. Summly uses a language-processing algorithm to summarize stories into smartphone-friendly blurbs. The company has begun trying to work with publishers to create summarized content - Yahoo's media empire could help with that. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]

$YHOO is paying just over $1 cash per $YHOO share for Tumblr (1.08bn YHOO shares). Shareholders: Would you prefer a $1 dividend instead? - View all 3 replies

David Jackson: Perhaps most current owners of $YHOO are growth investors, so they don't care about loss of a potential dividend.
