- Monday, April 8, 8:09 AM YPF has started processing crude at its largest refinery, which had been offline for more than five days after being damaged by flooding that devastated the nearby city of La Plata last Tuesday and cut power to the refinery, causing a serious fire in a coking unit that took more than eight hours to extinguish. The refinery accounts for nearly 30% of Argentina's fuel production. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, April 3, 9:04 AM Argentina's YPF says it suspended operations and contained a major fire at its La Plata oil refinery, the country's largest, although it is not clear if the fire has been completely extinguished. Lost production at La Plata is hardly welcome news for Argentina, which already is a major fuel importer. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Monday, April 1, 4:36 PM A freeze on Chevron's (CVX) funds in Argentina would not include future investments the company would make in the country, according to a lawyer for the Ecuadorian plaintiffs in the case behind the freeze. The stance could indicate a softer strategy against CVX in Argentina, where CVX is pursuing a proposed $1B deal with YPF to develop the Vaca Muerta shale formation. 2 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, March 26, 6:15 PM YPF signs a preliminary shale agreement with Dow Chemical (DOW) towards a 50-50 JV for the development of the El Orejano block in Argentina's Neuquen province, one of the first areas to boast discoveries in the Vaca Muerta formation. YPF already partners with Dow in downstream ventures including Argentina's Bahia Blanca petrochemical complex. 3 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, March 13, 2:19 PM Chevron (CVX) issues an ultimatum to Argentina, saying it will not make any progress on an agreed joint venture with YPF until a court threat to its assets is lifted. "We’d like to work with them," CVX vice chairman George Kirkland tells FT, but "this is our money." The tough line hurts the government’s hopes of forming a partnership with a top global oil company to help develop its vast shale reserves. 2 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, March 12, 8:58 AM YPF's ambitious program this year calls for drilling 132 oil wells at the Vaca Muerta shale formation in Patagonia, but the high cost of equipment could force it to scale back, CEO Michael Gallucio says after reporting Q4 results. Vaca Muerta holds one of the world's biggest deposits of shale resources, with ~23B boe; YPF has concessions on 40% of the site. YPF +1.7% premarket. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Monday, March 11, 7:07 PM YPF reports a profit of 3.9B pesos ($771M) in 2012, a 12.2% Y/Y decline due mainly to losses posted by subsidiaries and other companies YPF has a stake in, even as total revenue jumped 19.5% due to higher fuel sales in the local market. EBITDA rose 21.3%. Crude oil output rose 2.2% after falling 7.6% in 2011; natural gas output fell 2.3% vs. a 10.3% drop in 2011. Comment! [Energy, Earnings]
- Friday, March 8, 5:19 PM Repsol (REPYY.PK) says it is not in talks with Argentina over compensation relating to the expropriation of its 51% stake in YPF last year, after Reuters had reported earlier this week that Caixabank was brokering talks with the government. Repsol reiterates its willingness to negotiate with Argentina but wants full compensation for the stake. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, March 5, 2:59 PM Spanish lender Caixabank, which owns a 12.5% stake in Repsol (REPYY.PK), reportedly has held talks with Argentina's government to try to broker a compensation deal for the seizure of its majority stake in national oil company YPF (YPF +1.2%) last year. The talks are said to be very preliminary, with no deal likely in the short- to medium-term. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, February 6, 2:59 PM YPF CEO Miguel Galuccio met today with oil companies and investors in the UAE, including the head of Abu Dhabi's Mubadala sovereign wealth fund to discuss partnering to produce oil and gas in Argentina. Last year, Mubadala's $2B investment in Brazil had seemed to herald further involvement in Latin America. Galuccio has been courting international partners to boost output. 3 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Monday, February 4, 3:52 PM Observers say an Argentine's court decision last week to uphold a $19B embargo against Chevron's (CVX) local subsidiary makes it unlikely the company will pour money into the country. CVX's agreement to team with Argentina's YPF to invest ~$1B to explore the Vaca Muerta shale formation, with the prospect of $15B in investments in coming years, now seems doubtful. 9 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, January 4, 10:03 AM Spain's Repsol (REPYY.PK) says it will take legal action against Bridas International over a deal to develop shale resources with Argentina's state-controlled YPF, carrying out its threats to sue Chevron and anyone else who partners with YPF after the Argentine government seized control of its majority stake in YPF last April. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Monday, December 31, 2012, 8:45 AM Bridas International, which is controlled by Argentinian billionaire brothers, has agreed to invest $1.5B with YPF (YPF) to develop shale oil in Patagonia in southwestern Argentina. Bridas will also lend YPF $500M for the project. Cnooc (CEO) may be involved via a 50% holding in Bridas Corp. (See Chevron's $1B investment) Comment! [Energy]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 2:12 PM YPF (YPF -3.9%) signs an anticipated partnership deal with Chevron (CVX +0.5%) that aims to pave the way for investment in Argentina's shale resources. The initial deal envisions drilling 100 non-conventional oil wells at a cost of $1B; details of a permanent deal will be negotiated during the next few months. 1 Comment [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 10:58 AM Argentina's YPF (YPF -5.8%) sold 3.6B pesos ($736M) yesterday in its largest ever sale in the local bond market, pushing its issuance to a record 9.4B pesos this year and crowding out other companies looking to borrow. YPF hasn’t sold debt in overseas bond markets since the government expropriated it from Repsol. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Friday, December 14, 2012, 11:42 AM Shares of Argentina's YPF (YPF +5.7%) surge in early trading, as investors appear to be acting on a host of developments including expectations YPF will soon announce new investment deals with Chevron and Bridas Energy. YPF also has successfully issued new bonds recently and company officials are confident they can pull off the new investment plan unveiled earlier this year. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
