YUM vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
YUM! Brands, Inc. (referred to herein as “YUM”, the “Registrant” or the “Company”), was incorporated under the laws of the state of North Carolina in 1997. The principal executive offices of YUM are located at 1441 Gardiner Lane, Louisville, Kentucky 40213, and the telephone number at that... More

- Wednesday, May 15, 4:47 PM Yum Brands Inc. (YUM) declares $0.335/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 1.92%. For shareholders of record July 12. Payable August 2. Ex-div date July 10. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Wednesday, May 15, 12:27 PM Will Yum Brands (YUM +0.3%) energize its other chains with star performer KFC China suddenly hitting it a number of speed bumps in its race for runaway growth? Taco Bell and KFC have showed momentum in the U.S. recently, while other international markets look tempting with safety concerns tainting the company in China. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, May 13, 6:59 AM The collapse of Yum Brands' (YUM) market share in China isn't solely tied to the avian bird flu crisis, according to industry analysts. The KFC chain hasn't adapted its menu to consumer tastes in China successfully or tapped into "aspiration" diners. 8 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, May 10, 6:02 PM Yum Brands (YUM) -0.6% AH after announcing Chinese same-store sales fell 29% Y/Y in April amidst widespread avian flu/food safety fears. That's a little worse than a 27% consensus from 5 polled analysts and much worse than March's 13% drop, but as the consensus indicates, investors have already priced in a lot of China-related woe. Yum has 5.4K restaurant locations in China, and received 51% of its 2012 sales from the country. Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Friday, May 10, 7:47 AM Yum Brands (YUM) is cleared in China by the Shanghai Municipal Food Safety Committee over allegations it sourced meat from a wholesale food supplier under investigation. The company's Little Sheep unit was incorrectly posted on the agency's website. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, May 6, 6:40 AM Authorities in China investigate a supplier to a chain of Yum Brands (YUM) in the nation over safety procedures. The crackdown in the meat industry follows several high-profile incidents in China involving contaminated meat, several of which have embroiled Yum Brands. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Friday, May 3, 11:24 AM More on Taco Bell (previous): The mysterious roll-out of a new "low-end" menu is based on a strategy of offering items at the $1 price point. Execs say the Cravings menu will make sure the restaurant chain is taking care of the value-oriented consumers. QSR sector watch: The focus on the magical $1 mark by Taco Bell (YUM +1.4%) could add a little more pressure to peers such as McDonald's (MCD +0.8%), Wendy's (WEN +2.1%), and Burger King (BKW +2.2%) which have been running down a dual path of competing on value while also trying to entire consumers away from Panera Bread and Chipotle with fresher offerings. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 2, 3:36 PM Taco Bell (YUM +0.9%) is working on introducing a new "low-end" menu, according to a Bloomberg headline. If the report pans out, it will be a head scratcher since much of the recent strategy from the restaurant operator has been aimed at taking a little piece of Chipotle's lunchtime market share. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, April 29, 2:27 PM McDonald's (MCD +1.5%) and Dunkin' Donuts (DNKN +0.4%) are leading a pack of restaurant chains that are extending hours of operation in order to help pump up revenue. In some cases, the plan is pitting some companies against their own franchisees that are somewhat convinced the wee midnight to early breakfast hours aren't unprofitable. Analysts say it depends on the brand. What works for Taco Bell, Denny's, or White Castle might not work for the sector as a whole. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 24, 6:43 AM More on Yum Brands (YUM) (previous: I, II): With all the focus on China this year, it's almost lost in the shuffle that Yum Brands (YUM) operates more than a couple of KFC and Taco Bell restaurants in the U.S. where performance in Q1 came in strong. Same-store sales grew 2% to beat the pace of many rivals, while the company improved its operating margin by 4 percentage points to 23.7% due to sales leverage at Taco Bell. Though its painful for some Chipotle (CMG) loyalists to admit, the refreshed menu at Taco Bell is helping the chain make strides. YUM +3.7% premarket. 3 Comments [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]

After-hours top losers: VOCS -30%. UIS -16%. DV -12%. AWAY -8%. PNRA -6%. Comment! [On the Move] - Tuesday, April 23, 5:02 PM More on Yum Brands' (YUM) Q1 report: China Division sales and profits were off significantly, impacted by December's poultry supply issues. The region's same-store sales -20%, vs. +2% in U.S. and +1% at International division. Worldwide restaurant margin -2.7 points to 15.9% (includes 7-point decline in China). Full-year outlook is unchanged. Shares now +6.4% AH. Comment! [Earnings, Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 23, 4:51 PM Yum Brands (YUM): Q1 EPS of $0.70 beats by $0.10. Revenue of $2.54B (-8% Y/Y) misses by $0.5B. Shares +5.3% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 23, 9:40 AM Bank of America downgrades Yum Brands (YUM -1.3%) to Underperform from Buy and takes its price target to $60 from $80. Analyst Joseph Buckley applies a "lower near term valuation to YUM's China earnings … driven by uncertainty about sales and earnings tied to late 2012 negative [comps] being exacerbated at the start of 2013 by chicken supply concerns and … avian flu news." (See also: Avian flu weighs on YUM) Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 23, 7:36 AM The World Health Organization confirms that there is no evidence the H7N9 avian bird virus spreads from human to human contact. The news is good for Macau-based casinos (MPEL, WYNN, MGM) but won't do much to help Yum Brands (YUM) in the region. The company said earlier this month it suffered a "significant, negative impact" on KFC sales due to worries of chicken contamination in China, but investors are still waiting to hear just how bad the hit will be.
