Zynga (ZNGA)

- NASDAQ
  • Feb. 11, 2013, 1:23 PM
Zynga (ZNGA +5.8%) - yes, Zynga - is joining the ranks of Internet companies creating original programming. The company has hired Rush Hour director Bruce Ratner and studio Six Eleven Media to produce a series of 30-minute animated shows based on (wait for it...) FarmVille. Forbes' Paul Tassi, a long-time Zynga critic, is skeptical Zynga will reap major synergies, and also questions the show's appeal to adult FarmVille players. Shares are continuing their post-earnings rally today, perhaps lifted by rising online gambling hopes.

LinkedIn (LNKD +19.7%) is off to the races as accolades pour in following its huge Q4 beat, and is lifting some recent Internet IPOs along the way. YELP +5.6%. GRPN +2.7%. ZNGA +4.2%. "LinkedIn remains one of the best business models online today," writes Cantor, impressed with 106% Y/Y international growth but maintaining a Hold on valuation grounds. LinkedIn stated on its earnings call it plans a "mid-single-digit" price increase for its recruiting product. 2,400 Talent Solutions customers were added in Q4, raising the total base to 16.4K organizations.

Gaming companies with ties to New Jersey are on the move after Governor Chris Christie asks for revisions to a bill covering online gambling in the state. The governor says he will approve the bill if its allows for a 10-year trial period for online gambling and ups the state's take on winning to 15%. Boyd Gaming (BYD +5.6%) and Caesars Entertainment (CZR +13.7%) are flying off the news, while Zynga (ZNGA +2.5%) is getting a smaller speculative bounce on the idea that it can eventually get in on the fun too.

Zynga's (ZNGA -2.8%) U.K. real-money gambling titles (offered in partnership with local player bwin.party) will be available on the Web, PC apps, Facebook (FB), and perhaps also mobile apps, says chief revenue officer Barry Cottle. A Facebook spokeswoman states her company is comfortable with supporting U.K. online gambling, which could provide a boost to (slowing) Facebook Payments growth. Two sites - ZyngaPlusPoker and ZyngaPlusCasino - will launch by the end of June. (previous) (Nevada)

Zynga (ZNGA +9.1%) is adding to its post-earnings gains, maybe with the help of short-covering. In addition to the Q4 beat (fueled by cost cuts), Mark Pincus' earnings call remarks about focusing on profitability by steering resources towards online gambling, existing hits such as FarmVille 2, and a handful of new "midcore" titles seem to be going over well. Jefferies and Evercore remain cautious, noting visibility is low (no 2013 top-line guidance) and bookings are expected to fall again in Q1. Facebook (FB +1.5%) is up a bit.

Fresh off a quarter where R&D spending fell 70% Y/Y, Zynga (ZNGA) is shuttering CityVille 2 and two other games. Not getting shuttered is FarmVille 2, which Zynga says exceeded expectations by 100% and will soon hit mobile devices. 72M of Zynga's 298M MAUs are mobile-only, and (like Facebook, Yahoo, etc.) a majority of workers are now focused on mobile. But Draw Something users continue to decline. Zynga Poker MAUs rose 8% Y/Y to 37M, and real-money gambling titles will be launched in partnership with bwin.party in 1H. Shares +5.8% AH. More on BofA's two-notch upgrade of Zynga (ZNGA +5.3%): The firm, which is raising its PT to $3.40 from $2.70, thinks Q4/2012 bookings could beat guidance when Zynga reports today. It also thinks mobile trends have stabilized (plummeting activity for Draw Something took a toll on Q3 results), and argues downside is limited by $2.20/share in cash and assets, a $200M/year online poker business, and a $150M-$200M/year mobile business.

Facebook (FB -2.7%) is adding to Friday's losses - shares are now down 8% since the Q4 report arrived. The release of Facebook's 2012 10-K could be a factor - in the filing, Facebook notes its PC daily active users (DAUs) "declined modestly" in Q4 thanks to the mobile shift, even as total DAUs rose 5% Q/Q. Facebook also mentions 27M users (2.5% of year-end DAUs) relied on Facebook Payments (not yet extended to mobile) in 2012 to buy virtual goods from the likes of Zynga (ZNGA -0.6%).
