- Friday, March 22, 8:18 AM Stifel Nicolaus upgrades Mattress Firm (MFRM) to a Buy rating from Hold with a $37 price target. Shares of MFRM are 1.7% higher premarket while the mattress sector (TPX, ZZ, SCSS) is on watch for a sympathy rally. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, January 25, 8:12 AM Things are all topsy-turvy in the mattress sector. Though both Tempur-Pedic (TPX) and Select Comfort (SCSS) reported weak sales trends (I, II), TPX is up 16.5% premarket while SCSS is off 15.6% as the former company beat estimates and the latter one lagged. The most important message flowing out from the sector is that both sales and margins fell during Q4. Mattress Firm (MFRM) is up 1.1% premarket, while Sealy (ZZ) is inactive, but both look set for some volatility of their own. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 23, 5:54 PM More on Sealy Corp. (ZZ): Q4 beats on the bottom line as total sales jump 33% Y/Y, largely due to the extra week in the reporting period. Net losses still narrowed however, as the mattress maker's sales in both the U.S. and abroad strengthened and margins improved. Shares +0.5% AH. 1 Comment [Consumer, Earnings]
- Wednesday, January 23, 5:29 PM Sealy Corporation (ZZ): Q4 EPS of $0.04 beats by $0.07. Revenue of $358.1M (+33% Y/Y). (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Consumer]
- Friday, November 30, 2012, 4:52 PM Tempur-Pedic International (TPX) and Sealy Corporation (ZZ) both receive a second request from the FTC for additional information and documentary materials regarding TPX's proposed acquisition of ZZ. Completion of the transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions, but both companies continue to expect the transaction to close during H113. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Thursday, October 18, 2012, 1:41 PM Directors for Sealy (ZZ) face a lawsuit from investors over their backing of the $229M buyout of the firm by Tempur-Pedic. Also named in the suit is controlling shareholder KKR. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, September 27, 2012, 9:12 AM Tempur-Pedic (TPX) roars to a 14.2% gain in premarket action as traders latch on to the synergistic possibilities that could flow out of its purchase of Sealy (ZZ). At $30.63, shares trade right at where they began the week before the sector sold off. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, September 27, 2012, 8:10 AM Quick analyst take on Tempur-Pedic (TPX) buying Sealy (ZZ): The acquisition isn't a shocker, considering Tempur-Pedic needs to protect its brand and has plenty of manufacturing capacity, but could anti-trust issues crop up? The deal price of around $1.3B after factoring in debt doesn't look too pricey with leveraging opportunities in play. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Thursday, September 27, 2012, 8:04 AM More on the Tempur-Pedic (TPX +5.4%) / Sealy (ZZ) deal - Tempur-Pedic is paying $229M to acquire Sealy, although the whole transaction is valued at $1.3B including the Sealy debt that Tempur-Pedic has agreed to assume or repay. Having ended at $2.14 yesterday, Sealy shares spiked 10% earlier but have settled down a bit and are +4.2% to $2.23, above TPX's offer price of $2.20. Comment! [M&A, Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, September 27, 2012, 7:23 AM Tempur-Pedic (TPX) announces that it will buy fellow mattress seller Sealy (ZZ) for $2.20 a share in a deal slated to close during the first half of 2013. Under the terms of the agreement, Tempur-Pedic will assume or repay all of Sealy's outstanding convertible and non-convertible debt. Shares of ZZ +2.8% premarket to $2.20, TPX inactive. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Thursday, September 27, 2012, 7:22 AM Sealy (ZZ): FQ3 EPS of $0.00 misses by $0.03. Revenue of $365.4M (+9.4% Y/Y) beats by $21M. Shares +2.8% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, September 21, 2012, 12:23 PM Shares of Sealy (ZZ +10.3%) rip higher as Hayman Capital Management discloses in a SEC filing (13D) that it holds a 5.9% stake in the bedding seller. Though the sector tends to rally as a group, today Sealy is playing lone wolf. 1 Comment [On the Move, Consumer]
- Friday, September 7, 2012, 9:21 AM Mattress stocks are on watch for a shakeup after Mattress Firm clipped its estimates for FY13 earnings. Organic sales in the sector are now in focus with investors as companies start to run out of ways to buy growth. Premarket: MFRM -10.1%, SCS -1.3%, TPX -1.5%, ZZ inactive. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, August 6, 2012, 11:20 AM Mattress stocks run hot after buyout firm Advent acquires AOT Bedding Super Holdings, the owner of the Serta and Simmons mattress lines. Advancers: ZZ +4.1%, TPX +4.0%, MFRM +2.9%, SCSS +2.9%. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, July 19, 2012, 9:20 AM Mattress stocks could get a lift after Select Comfort beats earnings estimates for Q2 and sets its full-year earnings guidance higher. The trend with mattress names has been bouncy sector-wide trading on any bit of forward-looking news. On watch: TPX +4.1% premarket, ZZ, MFRM. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 11:34 AM Shares of Mattress Firm (MFRM -14.5%) get crushed after the company lowers its full-year revenue and same-store sales guidance. The weak sales outlook is disturbing enough, but after Mattress Firm backed its outlook just a month ago, UBS notes the creditability of management may be at issue. Sector movers: TPX -2.4%, SCSS -8.6%, ZZ -2.7%. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
