good article. The article does use many assumptions of real world scenarios which if they play out according to his theories would be great. This is exactly what we need to grasp. Author represents a view point of the younger generation and this is exactly what SA needs.

  • Nautilus Minerals: Mining The Sea Floor For Profits [View article]
sea floor mining makes sense in an era of sky high metal prices. There's no need to mine the sea floor when even advanced stage projects on land cannot find proper funding.

  • American Coal Company With Chinese Growth [View article]
It can be a good company but the red flags associated with this one raise quite a few alarm bells. They lack a reputable big accounting firm to conduct their audits and their area of operations is solely centered in China where standards and governance do not meet our criteria. One would imagine government entities would be safe cornerstone investments that would chug along over time, check out the stock exchange in Hong Kong where a bunch are listed. The stock prices get crushed all the time and most trade below IPO pricing. If government subs can't even convince normal retail investors to invest, the ability for a company like L&L is paint a better picture is terribly inadequate.

  • Could Penn West Now Be A Buy? [View article]
how does Penn West compare to its peer group? There are stronger companies in the group with bigger land positions. Do you expect natural gas prices to rebound? Penn West has been cutting staff in their oil and gas projects in Alberta for a long time. I would imagine most of the expertise has already left and the company is only a shell of its former self.

  • Apple's Loser Strategy [View article]
one of the main problems with emerging markets is the lack of middle class. There exists a great number that can easily afford the apple premium and an even larger number that aspires to join the legions of apple users. China is a prime example. Iphones do indeed cost a lot but many people are willing to shell out 6 months salary for the pleasure of owning one. Bad financial decision? yup but their mentality is very different than ours.

great article, valuable insight. Why does the ownership of Li Ka Shing make mutual fund managers weary? I figure it would be a good thing to have one of the world's richest man as a shareholder providing investors the ability to invest alongside a shrewd businessman.

  • Endeavour Mining - Building A Very Nice Production Profile [View article]
endeavour was spun out of Fiore Financial so it was built with some rainmakers in the mining industry. The mining industry seems to reward those with access to capital and past success and Endeavour meets the criteria. Their Africa projects are in areas of politically stability so a risk premium is not warranted.
