  • Arena Is The Subject Of A Buyout Rumor - Think First [View article]
One more question if you don't mind, Spencer. Sorry if you already answered this.

If you had to guess, and I know it is only that, what % chance do you give to the credibility of these rumors, and why would someone float such a rumor if it were not true?

The guy who floated this rumor used strong language; "Takeover talks between Eisai (OTCPK:ESALY) and Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA), who already have a marketing agreement, are back on "in a serious way," according to a post to a FTAlphaville Markets Live session by Paul Murphy."

    " . . . back on "in a serious way" . . . "

Either he or someone else is lying, or there is truth to the rumor.

    Thanks Spencer.

jakes101, a substantial difference, but stock would likely jump on either.

Great advice, jakevif. As a trader it's close to what I do, but it can be difficult and fraught with pitfalls for those who are inexperienced.

For example, bid/offer spreads are notoriously huge in this stock which a trader must negotiate correctly for profits to ensue. I don't like ARNA market makers. They are about as slippery as you can get.

I am not questioning his intelligence, only the way he uses it -- in other words, his taste or lack thereof. All the intelligence in the world is useless without wisdom and integrity attached to it. Spencer in my opinion shows all three.

    Hi Spencer,

Could you please clarify something for me about the buyout process?

Are you saying that if such a thing were really to occur, we would have at least 2 months or so of advanced notice that such a process were really in the works?

    Thanks

dannick, if you are worried about precise entries, why not sell some calls against your position and generate some income while you wait?

I was a huge ARNA bull when it was trading at $1.85, and for a long time after that. But now that I've seen Eisai basically waste a year, I've changed my mind. Money is much better put to work elsewhere.

Don't get me wrong. I still think a long term investor will do fine in ARNA over the next few years. Probably at least a double. But sometimes opportunities must be picked when they are ripe or they go stale. With each passing day, Eisai is blowing it. They are near the point of no return.

Bill, you seem to be the only heartbroken one here. How is this a "heartbreak" for anyone else?

Spencer, I find such an idea difficult to accept also. However, that said, one has to wonder as to the utter ineptness of the roll out. Eisai overstates their projections by 500%? Hires 200 reps for the first 6 months for what is supposed to be a potential "blockbuster" drug? 200 reps? Give me a break.

If the initial phase of the marketing campaign is primarily directed at educating physicians, why not start with 600 reps? I cannot help but think there is either gross incompetence or overconfidence at work.

Jakes, using the name Adam Feuerstein and "good taste" in the same comment is bordering on the hysterical. He relishes his job as a peddler of smear campaigns because his talent falls short of true greatness. People who act as he does are mediocrity posing as real talent.

"which is why Belviq's launch has been so disappointing"

Adam Feuerstein, aren't you the guy who said that Arena's own filings proclaimed they would not get FDA approval? Do you remember that laughable article you wrote? I'm sure many here do.

So when I bought the stock at $1.85 against your advice, in what sense has the launch of Belviq been disappointing to me?

PS. Aren't you also the guy who came out after FDA approval and apologized to the "Areniacs" for being too hard on them?

So why do you keep bashing? The stock is up over 300% since FDA approval. How again is that disappointing?

I get it that bad press is better than no press at all for those who are second-rate journalists, but do you ever get a little tired of looking at yourself in the mirror every morning?

I don't understand why a stock would rise with massive amounts of additional shares hitting the market. I thought the supply demand equation held that with an increase in supply there is a decrease in price. What am I missing?

I don't consider his remarks about Bush -- the worst president in US history -- to be insulting in the least. Truthful, yes. Bush destroyed this country. Obama sold out and is too weak to do anything about it.
