    Your logic is false and you have left yourself wide open for further criticism.

    That is to say, this blog entry has not made things better.

    [I do not follow SIRI at all nor have any opinions whatsoever about its reverse split nor the viability of the company as a whole. This comment is directed at your baseless leap of logic, poor "proof" that a reverse split is not a negative, and apparently personal attacks against someone elsewhere]

    But...but...but...there's no NEED for this week's "Palm investors" to apply a value to the stock! All the media is saying Palm is worth one to two billion dollars at LEAST so that's that! Plus a hedge fund (with...um...a.dubious performance history) just bought in tens of millions of dollars worth! It MUST be a good investment!

    If Palm has quietly changed the used-over-and-over-again definition of "sell-through" to simply mean that someone they sold to has in turn sold then they have materially changed a key number that they discuss in their earnings calls.

    Since Day One "sell-through" has ALWAYS meant "sales to a consumer" and has NEVER meant "sales to a retail venue". The difference is SO radical (especially the "hidden inventory" angle) that such a change would require overt mention, IMHO.

    In their 10Q Palm does not define sell-through, however they say only that they are relying on their customers to accurately report sell-through numbers. That is a rather wide hole in the reporting of a key statistic.

    Though I wouldn't doubt the conclusion of the Subject TOO much, it should be noted that the statistics being gathered are for web pages on which the statistics gatherer has ads which undoubtedly is a VERY small subset of mobile web pages out there.

    The book "How to Lie with Statistics", though half a century old, still has relevance today.

    That survey was invalid simply due to lack of respondents - the results MIGHT reflect reality but surveying only =200= iPhone users (WHICH 200?) is so into the noise-level of iPhone users it's just silly.

    And they "surveyed" 40...yes, only 40...Pre users at the same time.

    Why is this even newsworthy?

    The 4th quarter was not good; it was lousy. In fact, it was horrible. In actual fact, it was a disaster.

    Never ever confuse, as pretty much all the Media World has, that very poor "analyst" estimation being "beat" means a company has done a swell job. All it means was some very poor analysis was the bar over which Palm had to jump. NONE of the analysts took into account sell-in of 60,000 Pres; take away the Pre dollars and suddenly the results look as bad as they were. Those dollars, of course, aren't going to be in the NEXT results now, either.

    Palm management mentioned 1 million downloads of applications as if it represents something great about the Pre - instead it very clearly shows the Pre sell-THROUGH fell flat - 1 million applications SOUNDS good until you start figuring out how many applications (and updates?) a single Pre owner is going to get (they were all free, remember), then suddenly that 1 million applications downloaded starts translating into 100,000 or so Pres or so and one gasps at the suggested lack of sales.

    WHAT misinformation!!!?

    $300 up-front-walk-out-the-... price for the phone - like it or not.

    $70 for the first Touchstone and back - like it or not.

    $50 for every extra Touchstone (major marketing point of the Touchstone was you could have one at home and at office) and an ADDITIONAL set of bucks for the CHARGER that the Touchstone uses (unless you want to carry around your Pre charger and plug each Touchstone into it as you arrive at the location!). An expensive Everything plan and an ADDITIONAL cost for that "select" unlimited data plan.

    THAT'S what the buyer is confronted with at the store - like it or not.

    "Misinformation" my ass - you're going to see massive "Ya gotta be kidding!" comments coming out of no-longer-potential buyers when they see THAT.

    Palm already told us THIS quarter is going to be the pits - only $90,000,000 worth of business worldwide. If you are a carrier and see that Palm is going to cease to exist NEXT quarter, are you going to buy their phones knowing the likelihood of successful integration into HPQ , at BEST, is going to take a year?

    Palm isn't going to maintain marketshare.

    The survey was NOT of "4255 consumers" but instead "4255 high income high education senior tech-field consumers".

    I think that may have import w.r.t. how well this survey is representative of the general phone consumer population.
