The Commoditization of the 'Dellphone' [View article]
Commoditization of the cellphone space is exactly what that RBC "analyst" didn't take into account. Lack of profit margins will kill the less-than-nimble. The HTCs and Nokias of the world, able to spew out a dozen phones every couple months, should do okay (but not liking it) but whither the two-phones-a-year companies like Palm? Can they afford perpetual 15% margins?
> ...Palm has a market cap of about $1.9 billion; back out $260 million > in cash, add back $390 million in debt, and you get an enterprise > value of about $2 billion...
I am shocked that YOU continue to spout this nonsense - at least YOU have some history reporting on Palm and should be intimately familiar with it, its common shares, and its preferred shares that convert to common.
Try 200+ million shares at $13+/share to start, add in that $400 million in debt, add in a buyout premium (oh yeah...that) THEN see what it would cost for any company to acquire Palm for an unproven Operating System and unproven phone.
You were totally wrong about the Pre delivery date in your last Palm "blog" and you're now (an again) wrong about the worth of the Pre and WebOS to anyone outside Palm.
An untested phone and an untested brand new operating system in an untested context - the web rather than phone resident - isn't worth billions of dollars to anyone.
And that's what it would require to acquire Palm. With outstanding shares of 110 million and, what?, 80-ish million shares hidden away in the Preferred shares PLUS another $400 million in debt, then at the current price you're already talking billions of dollars without any premium at all being paid.
If Dell or anyone else is stupid enough to fall for THAT, short their shares into the ground.
Well, Palm just announce a rather significantly more disastrous quarter than even The Pessimists had been predicting AND mentioned the possibility of even further dilution (by issuing stock), probably due to an inability to get further loans.
So they have 180+ megashares out (converting those Preferred) and a stock price of $6.50, MASSIVE debt, and a strong potential to have even more share out.
Palm is losing money bigtime. The Pre isn't close to release. Palm's only phone is the Treo Pro (a nice Wndows Mobile phone - one of a cast of thousands available).
Dell has been talking to the same folks that make Palm's phones, in Taiwan, for years. all they need to do - ALL they need to do - is contract with those same ODMs.
Won;t cost billions (!!!) of dollars like a Palm purchase.
Why should Dell buy Palm when Motorola's handset division is ready to go, uses "industry standard" Android (and WinMob), and actually has products on the street?
Or how about Dell simply contract with HTC and have EVERYTHING Palm has right now at literally HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars less cost?
How much would failing Palm cost Dell? 1.5 to 2 BILLION dollars?

PALM: Ready to Break Out? [View article]
Though the "brilliant" part is a reach, the rest is something very few have even brought up much less seriously discussed.
Being a SVP in charge of hardware (not software) does not a CEO make.

I see another SeekingAlpha article has mentioned "Dell smartphone acquisition" today.
I wonder what hedge fund has a position in Palm they want to exit?

True, it's been done before.
True, Dell has been in contact with Taiwan phone manufacturers for years already.
True, Palm doesn't make nor design their own phones anymore
But what the heck! To the moon, Alice!
[and subtle, really subtle first shot there!]
