  • Rebuttal: 'Is A House Really A Good Investment?' [View article]
Wow great article and very simple to follow and understand. I would also like to mention the tax benefit on selling the primary residence. You don't owe any tax upto $250K for single filer and $500K for joint filer. In stock market you pay atleast 15% on long term gains. My plan is to live in the big house until my kids finish schooling and then downgrade to a smaller house and hopefully don't pay any taxes on the gains on my home. Also with current interest rate I got in for 3.5% which is going to be more savings. Again everyone's situation is different For me I believe my plan will work.

Hello I am new to investing and sorry if this is not the correct section to ask this question. I am interested and trying to build a dividend growth portfolio and trying to find what is the best way to reinvest the dividends. I have JNJ and PEP that pays dividend and I have my account with a brokerage Etrade. should I ask them to reinvest the dividends? or should I check with JNJ or PEP to see if they offer investors like me? Thanks for your help.

    HigherAlpha,

Could you explain on tax being higher for dividends vs capital gains? I thought capital gains on long term gains are taxed at15% and only qualified dividends are eligible for 15%. Regular dividends are taxed at your highest tax bracket. I am in the accumulating phase and trying to add most of the dividend paying stocks in IRA and growth stocks in Taxable account. Any information will be helpful for my long term planning.

    Thanks

Gapwedge thanks for your comments. Even with my brokerage I have to make the choice of automatic re-investment. you mentioned about meeting your personal goal, does it mean you do not keep the stock in your portfolio for a longer time? I was thinking if the correct stocks are picked then you could leave it for a long time and see the dividends growing. Sorry I am still learning and any help is much appreciated.

  • Shrinking U.S. Trade Gap No Fluke; Weakening Asian Export Subsidies The Reason [View article]
I think the author clearly agrees with your comments by saying
"Japanese capitalists who own stakes in exporting industries benefit since the subsidies will increase their volume of sales, but almost everyone else gets burned. Middle-class consumers must pay higher prices for goods. Inflation strips away the value of salaries every year. Overall, the vast majority of Japanese are worse off in our scenario; the only beneficiaries are a select few wealthy individuals. But once again, we can see how this mercantilistic system can increase the gap between the wealthy and the poor."

The exporters will benefit but everyone else will suffer. I like the article and I do not think the basic premise as per your explanation is wrong.

    Thanks Foosie.
when you say PEP and JNJ do have DRIPS what does it mean? Can I buy shares directly from them? any detail is much appreciated. I thought we should have a brokerage account to buy stocks. Sorry if these are silly/basic questions. I am still learning.

Could you tell how long it will take for this additional 20MM metallurgical coal to be taken out of market? I could not find any details in the earnings report. If you have any idea that will be very helpful.

    Thanks
