Surprised GG is not on the list ahead of the other miners listed

  • Update: Rubicon Minerals' Q3 Financials [View article]
We don't hold many juniors, but we do have RMX, and are unhappy that we didn't pick up more earlier this month when it dropped under $1.00 (CDN) briefly. RMX has everything you could want in a late development stage junior. I don't think we'll see another chance to buy it under $1.00 unless there's a liquidity crisis of some kind - the pressure will be to the upside the closer they get to production.

  • Goldcorp: The Bear Case [View article]
GG isn't a buy and hold stock. It's for trading, and at times it can trade in fairly predictable ranges - unlike ABX.

  • Goldcorp: The Bear Case [View article]
Ben, I was surprised by this article. You claim that Goldcorp is a universally loved gold miner - but there's no such thing. Anyone who has owned gold miners over the last five years can tell you that. It's because Goldcorp has executed better than the others in this low gold price environment that analysts give it a market outperform rating. It seems to me that most of your comments are a rant against gold mining in general, rather than against Goldcorp. I can't blame you for that - it's a crummy business to be in - risky and dangerous, with the price of gold clearly manipulated. You suggest that Goldcorp should issue shares to make an acquisition to ensure future reserves - but why in a low interest world would you dilute your shareholders to make an acquisition when you have the cash and
    credit facilities already in place?

  • Here's The Best Way To Invest In Gold, And It's Not What Investors Might Expect [View article]
Their stock took a dive when they went back into oil, and it took a long time to get out with a small loss - it's still trading in that range. There are better gold plays, and better energy plays. Better to get pure plays - so much easier to understand.

  • Goldcorp: Why I'm Staying Long Shares Of This Particular Gold Mining Play [View article]
James, I'm trying to understand your math. Osisko closed on Friday at $5.17. Goldcorp closed at $23.19. So the Goldcorp offer was .146 of a GG share plus 2.26 in cash - that totals $5.64. So the offer was at a premium to the market. It may be a -ball offer but what would you expect in this market. Anyway it doesn't help anyone to just make stuff up

  • Barrick Gold's (ABX +0.8%) Pascua-Lama gold mine in the Andes is set to receive yet another a blow, with a Chilean court expected to unanimously order the continued suspension of work on the $8.5B project. The court, which is due to rule today, froze construction at the site in April to consider claims by indigenous communities that the work has damaged glaciers and water supplies. Barrick will probably appeal a negative ruling, which could also affect Silver Wheaton (SLW) and Royal Gold (RGLD).  [View news story]
Doesn't sound like news. Has ABX has done anything to change the situation? I doubt it - the solution has yet to be found.

  • Gold miners soon will release quarterly earnings, but J.P. Morgan says investors should focus on what the companies are doing to cut costs. Barrick Gold (ABX) would be profitable even if gold falls to $1,300/oz., the firm says, but remains vulnerable due to cash needed to operate the Pascua-Lama mine and massive debt on its balance sheet. Goldcorp (GG) has a strong balance sheet and $2B in an undrawn revolver. [View news story]
Evan, I think you're right to hold on to the miners - I certainly am, but I disagree with your statement that the "physical price is likely oversold”, it's actually the paper price that is oversold. The physical demand is very strong. It's just that the price is dictated by the COMEX and all of the short selling and margin covering that goes on there. It has nothing to do with physical demand which is strong - not only from central banks, but also from retail investors who, according to my bank manager here in Canada are placing orders for gold coins in unprecedented numbers.

  • J.P. Morgan's John Bridges can think of more reasons why gold prices have been sluggish (earlier), but believes investors should swoop in to buy the metal via the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) ETF and shares of selected gold miners. His favorites: Silver Wheaton (SLW), Newmont Mining (NEM) and Goldcorp (GG), whose CEO Chuck Jeannes sees gold at $2,000 in the next two or three years. [View news story]
So their plan is to cap gold under $2,000 for two or three years!

  • Banks reportedly forged ahead this week with syndication of a $12.5B loan package backing Freeport McMoran's (FCX +4%) two recent acquisitions despite growing shareholder concerns. Bankers are mostly shrugging off the transaction risk due to FCX's strong risk profile; net debt to EBITDA is -0.03x and will move up to only 1.9x under the terms of the transaction. [View news story]
yes the banks could be sued but they'd just have to pay a small fine anyway - maybe 3 days profit?
