  • Update: Double-Digit Distribution Portfolio [View article]
So you had a bad pick on one stock. had you used a ETN or ETF in that same sector you still would have taken a hit because of what's going on in the oil sector. I think you've done a good job overall.

  • Linn Energy At $80 Oil [View article]
Isn't the problem the Saudi's not Ebola. We can not export oil because of the laws from back in the 70's. We are awash in oil, the Saudi's are not cutting production so they can establish increased market contracts to China, India, etc. They also squeeze margins for U.S. producers, deep water drilling for other areas and possible stop our drilling for more; after all there is no more storage capacity. So I get to fill my tank for 2.79 [costco 2 days ago] and producers have to write futures contracts at lower prices and when congress finally lets Exxon and the other big oil co's export the Saudis and some of the other OPeC partners have locked in contracts and we have fewer places to sell what we have.

Watched BBEP for a long time now, thanks for your write up. You didn't mention QRE and how those assets will change BBEPs oil and gas mix over the next year, any thoughts?

  • Rising Interest Rates And BDCs: Part 2 [View article]
great as always....Question, time frame of rate increases and the how and when of BDC impact. If we are looking at fed change in rate spring of 2015, it should be 25 basis pts per meeting. Meaning it should take almost all of 2015 to complete a 100 basis rate increase. Does this create a steady drag on BDC's or do we have an initial run for the hills market reaction with minimal impacts for the rest of the year. Also, as rates change each of the BDCs will adjust, some differently than others. New lending will also take into account rising rates so you would hope NII will remain the same. To increase available funds how many BDCs will do new issuance's in front of rate changes to lend at higher rates downstream. The more I think of what you've given us the more questions I have.

LINCO should be not reporting distributions as dividends but return of capital?

Replace those low yield stocks now with things like, BBEP, MMEP, PSC, Main. There are a lot of good high yield replacements paying dividends or return of capital at very good rates. Like you if I had known how good this retirement thing was I would have done it sooner.

  • Strong Demand Will Keep BreitBurn Afloat [View article]
I have loved BBEP and MEMP for a while now but I'm starting to get worried about the changes in the oil market. Prices dropped just this morning because of the reported Iran deal. BBEP's production is good and getting better but so is everyone else's. Dropping prices for the barrel are going to squeeze oil producers profits and dividends. Be careful about forward looking projections, oil transports and oil users may be in a better position going forward.

  • After A Rough Quarter, Northern Tier Energy Moves To The Top Of The Refinery MLPs [View article]
Maybe I'm wrong but by 2015 Libbia will be more sorted politically so more oil for Europe. If Iran comes up with a deal on fissionable material production then sanctions will start to be lifted on their oil. An article in Tanker Operator is about the largest ship ever built, which is going to be a gas to liquid platform off Australia, better access for China and Japan. Brazil, which already runs just about everything on refined sugar cane, and has large areas off the coast where oil has been reported. As the US imports less, more oil is available on the world market. I think a squeeze is starting on everything for oil and gas profits. If you make 5% profit on a barrel of oil and the price drops so does the income.

  • After A Rough Quarter, Northern Tier Energy Moves To The Top Of The Refinery MLPs [View article]
Of all the refiners NTI seems to be well run and in a better position than most. Their cost per barrel is lower than WTI but....we are at the beginning of a squeeze on oil. Every day the US becomes more oil independent, more oil less price. Storage of oil and nat gas is at an all time high, shipping rates for tankers are starting to rise because more is being shipped. There are a lot of countries that use and need oil but the supply is available and going to increase. That pushes north sea, wti and NTI's favorable Canada crude price down. Be very careful about future dividends, they may not be what we expect, they may always be below .50.

  • Western Refining Set To Take Control Of Northern Tier Energy? [View article]
The metrics will change but the price will not go up. By 2015 Libbia will be more sorted politically so more oil to Europe. If Iran comes up with a deal on fissionable material production then sanctions will start to be lifted on their oil. There's an article in Tanker Operator [or monthly] about the largest ship ever built, which is going to be a gas to liquid platform off Australia, better access for China and Japan. And lets not forget Brazil, which already runs just about everything on refined sugar cane, and has large areas off the coast where oil has been reported. The squeeze is starting on everything for oil and gas profits.
