  • How Does A Smaller, Nimbler, More Focused Vodafone Stack Up? [View article]
After some VOD sales pre-distribution i owned 102 shares at $19.64 a share and ended up with 55 vod shares, 26 vz shares, $55.13 cash payment for fractional shares and $502.66 cash dividend payout .
What is my cost basis in the remaining 55 VOD and 26 VZ shares? I assume I'll be paying taxes on the cash received.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Why My Money Went To Spain Today [View article]
Besos for Pesos? I'm long EWP using profits made in Dec / January activity in IEV and veurx. Thanks for article.
It seems that 60-70% of the Europe and Spain financial comments have some positive element versus the 100% negative Europe is in recession ratio of a year ago. Even fleeting glinting comments that France is leaving recession. Vraiment?

  • AT&T Should Yield 6% With Google Fiber Looming [View article]
Pensions etc were driven to telecoms for yield when quite safe 6 month, year, 2 year, and ten year yields were almost nothing. A 100 basis point increase in the 10 year for example has chaa-anged the game and is way the biggest recent factor in the decrease stock price of telco's utilities etc..

  • LinkedIn: Why Are Investors Paying So Much For This Stock? [View article]
Filed under market shenanigans is this: How often have you seen a run up to earnings announcement in a "high flyer." It seems a normal gaming mechanism to me. It seems, more often than not, to reward sellers at this gaming top (although I lack the cojones to bet on it and because I'm an option incrementalist.)

My point here is : at 3:00pm on the fifth LNKD was $212.00. After the gaming run up, 3:00 on sixth LNKD was $223.00. This action is bull. At 3:00 on 7th after announcement LNKD was $210, basically the same as before the gaming action. To me the headline or the analysis that LNKD had given up 9% has no merit. It was valued at $212 by market before gaming action and basically the same after the game concluded. LNKD did not get hammered, it just didn't have any new juice.

I went short LNKD at $135 months ago but closed the position (up) due to lack of patience and a percieved poor risk reward parameter. Stubbornness and a dislike of this among other social media stocks will probably drive me to try to sell a top again some day.

  • Dividend Portfolio Super Bowl: JPMorgan Vs. KLA-Tencor [View article]
" JPMorgan pays a dividend of 2.76% with a payout ratio of 35% of trailing 12-month earnings while KLAC pays a dividend of 2.92% with a payout ratio of 55% of trailing 12-month earnings. KLAC wins Game Four of the series "

I think JPM wins. 2.76 and 2.92 are basically equal , 55% is muy large compared to 35%.
    JPM wins.
    Good writing.

  • Dividend Portfolio Semi-Finals: JPMorgan Vs. Amgen [View article]
Very cool idea and writing style. Way to go!
As to the investing "one big puzzle" I use a Sartre/Camu-Your greed/my money- NyQuil-chaos theory.
(There's no God or right and wrong: sell options /pocket the premium: invest such that you can sleep easily (modified hedging): and trust that the unexpected will happen and can partially be planned into a portfolio.)

  • Frontier Communications Doubles Down On Landlines [View article]
This is culled from the daily upgrade/downgrade blast from "Analyst Rating Network".
"Frontier Communications Corp. (NYSE:FTR) is now covered by analysts at Jefferies Group. They set a "buy" rating and a $6.00 price target on the stock. 27.7% upside from the previous close of $4.70. "

Also many thanks to the Seeking Alpha entity that heralded the FTR trading halt. This is one of the better aspects of the minions at Seeking Alpha!
I post haste sold 2/3rds of my multi thousand position in extended hours trading (pre-9:30 open) at a nice $5.00. From SA reading and tape reading and having watched 3 companies choke on Verizon asset sales it never dawned on me that FTR might surpass and hold above $5.00 ish.
Beware SA flock: "the 3 companies choke scenario."
I'm now short and ahead on a few thousand $4.50 puts as well as long 1/3 of my previous position but won't hesitate to plunge yet again long the stock at $4.30-$4.45.
Thanks again SA for timely reporting!

  • Bank Of Montreal's Dividend Hike And Strong Q4 Results Represent A Solid Finish To Fiscal 2013 [View article]
There are fundamentals and there is "price action." Zacks jumped to a "2" (buy) a while back as the stock was hotly heading to $70 I assume based on volume, etc as well as receding fears that the Canadian mortgage industry was in trouble. At the recent earnings decline moment they went "5", "strong sell" and now sell. By buying calls on the upward leg and then liquidating my 400 shares I managed a 6% return (plus dividends.)
My point, while not particularly well made, is that I feel assured that Zack's readings combined astute technical analysis for a somewhat staid stock that had a frothy element resulting in good recs and good trading results.

  • Bank Of Montreal's Dividend Hike And Strong Q4 Results Represent A Solid Finish To Fiscal 2013 [View article]
Read somewhere that the reported eps included $ .17 a share from a special tax event which meant BMO was a bust for meeting street estimates.
(I own BMO and half my profits come from options trades. Initially I got hammered on the run up because I had sold calls but bought a large handful of calls to outperform eventually (which I sold out weeks ago.)

  • Should You Still Buy Frontier Communications At $4.67? [View article]
The comment that ftr has lost 13% over last two years can be adjusted to an apples versus apples equation. I.e if stock A pays a 5% dividend and stock B pays say 10% then over two years ftr would be a 3% loser in comparison.
I notionally book half of ftr's dividend as a dividend and the other half as a return of capital which can be allocated to reducing per share cost basis. This pretties the picture a bit. I also slam my account with out of the money leap options to good results (so far cross fingers.)
