  • "I certainly expect [Microsoft's] org chart to look a lot different six months from now," says former Microsoft exec Brad Silverberg, who (like many others) views Steven Sinofsky's departure as the first step in a big push to get Microsoft's (MSFT) fiefdoms to finally play nice with each other. But some still think ousting Sinofsky was short-sighted. Farhad Manjoo: "So [Sinofsky] was a jerk. So what? ... He was the firm’s most thoughtful executive, certainly more perceptive about technology than Ballmer." [View news story]
Re: "Sinofsky being a jerk, so what?"
It is one thing to be a jerk and be divisive and undermine teamwork and quite another thing to be a jerk and unite everyone in the organization with a common vision.
That, to me, is the 'so what!'
Steve Jobs always wanted Apple to be division-free, in vision, products, and bottom line. Now that SInofsky is gone Microsoft can emulate that model and break down the culture of territories into a real team with a common vision. I believe this augers a promising opportunity for the corporate giant to do amazing things in the future!

  • Microsoft Surface, And Windows 8 Tablets In General, Will Be Competitive [View article]
I agree with your take and I suspect once Windows8 releases there will be an organic growth in demand for phones running Win8 as well. This will create a hybrid ecosystem taking the best of both worlds of $AAPL's proprietary ecosystem and $GOOG's open source Android OS chaos system. Serious bites will be taken out of the market and many naysayers will be feasting on a glut of crow. No one has really focused on the huge Xbox/Kinnect and $BN ecosystem implications yet either. Kudos for $MSFT for finally approximating something like getting it right. That said, let's see the price points...

  • Apple (AAPL) confirms it has hired Adobe (ADBE) CTO Kevin Lynch. He'll be the company's VP of technology, and report to wireless hardware/chip engineering chief Bob Mansfield. There's some speculation Lynch's role in spearheading Adobe's successful cloud software push may have appealed to Apple. Adobe says it won't be hiring a new CTO; Lynch's responsibilities will be doled out to other execs. A source tells AllThingsD Lynch wanted to be Adobe's CEO. (earlier[View news story]
Mark my words, this will be remembered as a Master Stroke for Apple.

  • Kudos To The R&D Guys At Apple [View article]
Let's just say R&D osts were less when SJ was dictating to engineers what he wanted, what shape it should be, how much it should weigh, what it should do, how it should sound, how fast it should be, how it should function, how it should look, how it should feel to operate - and that is not to say innovation is gone, just that it will cost significantly more $$$ going forward!

  • Apple states on its FQ2 earnings call (webcast, live blog) its conservative FQ3 guidance was partly due to a 2.6M Q/Q increase in iPhone channel inventory. Its strong FQ2 gross margin is attributed to lower commodity costs (i.e. cheaper flash memory) and product mix (more iPhones). Tim Cook adds Apple won't follow Microsoft's (MSFT) lead in offering "converged" PC/tablet devices. iTunes revenue was $1.9B, +35% Y/Y. China revenue rose over 3x to $7.9B. AAPL +7.1% AH.  [View news story]
IMHO, Apple is smart enough to avoid the pitfalls of a converged tablet/PC - in truth, these devices just wind up being the worst of both worlds.
