Why Coca-Cola Is Better Than PepsiCo [View article]
PEP has no real comparison any longer to KO. PEP is not beverage company, but a true consumer staple, selling much more than beverages. Anyone comparing these companies is 10 years behind the times. Get real! The Cola wars are over. PEP is a true foods company, KO sells beverages. Times have changed.
Magnum Hunter (MHR +16.9%) shares have been pushing higher all day, although the only news is the closing of the previously announced sale of Eagle Ford shale properties to Penn Virginia (PVA) for $401M. The stock actually received a downgrade, to Neutral from Add at CapitalOne; earlier this week, Deutsche Bank cut shares to Hold and chopped its price target in half. [View news story]

Has anyone else out there besides me been in this stock so long that they have the expirable warrants, that expire in October of this year. MHR issued them several years ago, stating that if the stock was At $10.50 a share by October 2013 you could turn in your warrants for whatever the stock was worth. We were isssued warrants on a 1 to 10 basis. What a farce that was, I am sure that the management at the time did it to make all of us feel very assured that we had a good bet that was on the way up. Every time I open up my home page at my brokerage and see those it is a very sore reminder of what a fool I was.

Just feeling like somebody on "Survivor" right now. What is disheartening is that this company has promise. I lived in the middle of the Eagle Ford area for years, know what is going on. For the love of me I cannot figure out why this is not working.

Some of us got in at 3's, 4's, 5's, 6's, 7's, 8's. Once upon a time this actually was an $8 stock, rolling along. Then it all went to hell. As you say, might as well hang in. Thank goodness, I own a load of PEP. That has sure looked good lately. Oh well, I have lived through a lot worse. I remember when Applied Materials and Qualcom were big dollar stocks. Look at them now, I'm still here. I still have hopes for MHR. In the meantime, buy a Pepsi and some Fritos.

Me too, still long, but anxious. My faith in Mr. Evans et al. has lessened. I have lived almost 70 years, and seen some other bad financial times, I just hope this turns out well, for all of us. Financial wisdom says all my money should be in bonds, but I have little faith in financial wisdom. That is an oxymoron. Risk makes your investing interesting, not boring. Hold on, this is going to be an interesting ride.

I have to agree. This is still a whole new area in the oil business, I can recall worrying that Fraccing would be shut down. If you have money in you can always sell, I choose not to . Just remember, we have been sitting back for some time waiting for management just to file quarterlies. The whole thing is very trying. Gotta play this out.

Randal, me too. I have over 40K shares, bought over a long period of time. I can remember when this was an $8 stock. Bought some then too. I guess I am obviously in this for the long haul, but you have to have some concern when all these accounting problems are going on. I believe Evans knows his business, but he is suddenly going from oil rich country back into Natgas country. Makes me wonder where his aims are, and his thinking. All we can do is look to the future, I am in really deep.

Lets hope so, Randal. MHR news this morning shows a law firm has jumped in and is soliciting MHR investors for law suit. I have been in for 3 years, own a lot of the stock. Hope all this turns out, but it will take a long time to recoup unless MHR can pull a really big rabbit out of the hat.
Magnum Hunter (MHR -18.6%) is defended by SunTrust after the oil and gas explorer fired its auditor, sending shares plunging, Analyst Neal Dingmann says a major writedown is unlikely, and he believes proven reserves, MHR's credit facility and sales in Eagle Ford will not be affected. SunTrust has a Buy rating on the stock with a $10 price target. [View news story]
I agree with Mr. Maher. This fall is managements fault, I am very long in MHR, but these people need to get it together. The Delay in filings has hurt all the investors, and it needs to be corrected. Add todays disclosure about changing accounting firms, and my portfolio is a disaster.
More analysis on the rumored PepsiCo (PEP) - Mondelez International (MDLZ -0.8%) combination (previous): JPMorgan's John Faucher is a major skeptic that PepsiCo will be willing to merge Frito-Lay with Mondelez even with activist investors on the scene. The analyst notes a tax-advantaged Reverse Morris Trust transaction is unlikely due to the size of the potential deal while an outright buy of MDLZ would be too pricey. [View news story]
Well, after being an active investor for many years I have learned why analyst starts with anal. These guys get paid big bucks to change their mind, and affect our lives, every day. I would rather trust my gut than any analyst. I hope PEP does something with this deal, but if not, the worst can happen is they are still PEP, and my family has made good money with them for 3 generations since my grandfather blew his life savings on Frito. What a smart man, and he was a grocer, not an analyst.
Magnum Hunter (MHR -17.7%) plunges at the open after disclosing it dismissed Pricewaterhouse as its auditor. Damn, I have a lot in this company. Apparently, way too much. I have been long for over 3 years. Evans is supposed to be really good. I hope this is not another Enron deal. I assume with all the sales and acquisitions there could be problems, lets hope not intentional. Frankly, I don't know what to do with the stock. I had great hopes, it seems to me that somewhere down the line things have gone off track. I am just hoping they can get this straightened out, I have a lot of money riding on this company.
When looking for dividend stocks, Kelley Wright believes a company isn't necessarily more attractive just because it pays a higher dividend. The key is when a stock's current yield is at the high end of the range of past yields; a strong balance sheet and a consistent pattern of higher earnings and rising dividends help too. Wright's top 10: APD, ADM, KO, COP, CVX, OXY, PEP, RS, TXN, WAG. [View news story]
3 generations of my family have owned PEP. It has been very good to us. My dividends are an important part of my retirement.
Magnum Hunter Resources (MHR -2.5%) begins drilling its first operated well in Ohio's Utica shale, not far from three horizontals drilled by MHR targeting the Marcellus shale to the east. MHR says about half of its 79K-acre net Utica position is in the wet-gas window of the play. [View news story]
I am getting sick and damn tired of almost anything MHR does. I have held the stock for some years now, it seems to be like a slinky walking down the stairs. I don't know where I am on the Slinky, they don't know what staircase they are on. I sure hope this doesn't turn into another Enron.
