It is a bit complicated (of course, anything with IRS seems to be). The first limit is easily reached for quite a few investors. This limit is for claiming credit right on Form 1040. For those over, you file Form 1116.

Then the credit cannot be more than one's taxes due. So for example, if all you did was invest in foreign dividend stocks and paid between 10% to 35% to the foreign government, then at tax filing time, you may find that you don't owe taxes because you didn't have a regular income and/or capital gains or own business. Now the foreign tax credit that you want to claim wouldn't translate into a refund. You can take it off dollar-for-dollar against your other taxes. I have a regular job so don't have this issue. My regular taxes are at least 100 times the foreign taxes deducted.

I continue to have 10 limit order for various foreign stocks. They are so infrequently traded that perhaps one day somebody would need access to their money and sell at my dirt-cheap limit buy price :-) Or there might be a fat-finger syndrome and someone will sell at $60 stock for $40, as an example!!

I buy mostly in regular brokerage accounts so can claim all foreign taxes paid. For me, Swiss companies offer a lot of value and potential and diversification. My favorites remain:

Nestle (still waiting for a good entry point)
ABB (bought some and will buy more if it falls)
STMicro (I believe that their dividend is safe and EPS will improve)
Novartis (I sold mine at recent highs and will re-enter if it falls)
ACE (I may buy for total returns in future)

The stock has done well for me but I just wanted to add that it is very volatile (compared to my other holdings at least). It easily sees a 10% swing in 10 day periods. I haven't traded it but it could be done by investors good at this. Sell around ~$23 and enter ~$20.

It does have a significant amount of revenue and profits from a single customer which has held the stock back. The mgmt is trying to resolve this issue but haven't really been able to do so in the immediate past. I am happy to hold and will buy more if it falls to $17-18 ever (for a 4% yield). Dividend yields of Siemens and Santander are also wrong. Makes me wonder what kind of investment consultancy business is the author running? I can expect such errors from mom-n-dad individual investors but not from a professional investor/advisor. There is so little content in this article unfortunately.

Ambarella declared results last evening that beat analysts expectations. The stock is now at $13.55 compared to $9.30 when I submitted this article which is 45% jump in price. Something that I strive to achieve in 3-4 years. Of course, I didn't buy it at $9.3 hoping to buy closer to $9 :-). Not sure if I will ever see it there in near future.

http://bit.ly/Z6w1o4

I had Olin for almost 3 years and then decided that it was time to move on even though the recent activities related to gun control would probably most revenues in the short-term. I am happy to sell though haven't redeployed the funds anywhere yet. Perhaps if the markets and/or individual stocks come down.

Did you buy anything or are you looking to buy something?

When did Apple switch to Qualcomm?

How about Broadcom? Do they have any integrated application processor with the baseband modem? And Intel? Are they working to integrate their Atom with modem functionality?

In the lower end, does Mediatek offer any application processor and/or baseband that is interesting? Sure, I may be incorrect but I am looking forward to learning. I was wondering if you could tell me any approximate percent of chips that are shipping today at 32nm, 45nm etc. excluding processors (like i3/i5 etc.).

Just leave Intel aside and out of the 20-odd semiconductor companies like Broadcom, Qualcomm, Nvidia, Texas Instruments, STMicro, Mediatek, MStar, Realtek, Zoran/CSR, Conexant, Marvell, LSI, Analog Devices, Cypress, Ceva, Ambarella, Zenverge, Vixs, Sigma Designs, Silicon Image, etc. which ones are shipping 32nm and 22nm right now and in what volumes? Any ideas or further information?

Thanks for your excellent discussion about European telecom companies. Do you have any views on Deutsche Telekom? And what about TEF? Do you think it might be worth buying or holding with the expectation that things will improve in next two years and dividend might get reinstated?

How about Vodafone? There is speculation that Vodafone might sell their 45% stake in Verizon Wireless and that would really help pare down the debt and perhaps help pay a giant dividend as well? Any thoughts.
