I'm at the stage where I'd like to preserve the value of my little portfolio. I've moved to about 80% preferred stocks, with an average yield around 7.5%. If they hold their own,, I'll be happy with that, and can take distribution if/when I need. Other wise I let the div's accumulate and watch for bagain buys, such as CLF last week. Many times I turn over a 10-15% gain in 3 days, a week, sometimes not. But that's my play money,, not the bulk - it's in Preferred. And I never pay more than ONE dividend premium when buying Pfd. Quantum has several good lists to search.

It always chaps me that current shareholders do not get a chance to buy new issues of preferred or common,, at the issue price. Wouldn't be that hard to sell direct and avoid the cost of the broker fees, etc., seems to me that the company would net much more from the sale, and shareholders might be happier. Just saying . . .

I use a portion of cash in account in a similar fashion, I try to buy 2 to 4 weeks in advance of X date, stocks that historically go up around the X Date. Then I place a gtc sell order, adding the dividend, commission, and even a little extra for fun. Usually the stock will sell before the X date. I have captured the dividend, and am out before the drop on the X date - works for me, because I have seen too many that dropped way more that the amount of the dividend. .

As proud owner of 14 MLP's/LLC's, I can tell you the taxes are NOT deferred. You will pay taxes on your share of the company's profit each year, but you cannot claim your share of company losses until you sell the shares. It is somewhat confusing that the amount of your dividend/distributions each year have nothing to do with your tax liabilities. I use TurboTax to wade thru the nightmare gyrations of tax return, but you would be well advised to use an accountant for this.

Can anyone justify/validate why a preferred ETF is better than owning individual preferred stock? I've always kept a few pfd stock paying 8% and up, and recently long FFC, an ETF paying over 9% at my cost. I presumed when I bought that FFC used leverage to fund the higher dividend, , but now I'm wondering if it is not just return of capital. .
At one point I thought diversity was the goal, but in my experience, I found that when one goes down,, they basically ALL go down, some more than others, some less, but not enought difference there to stand out. . so I'm still a confused amateur.

My first "read" of one of your articles, , excellant information in a language even an Arky can understand. In the past year I have shifted about 75% of my modest portfolio to ETF's in the sectors of Muni's, MLP's, preferred's, and mREIT's. When I look at the holdings of these funds, I always wonder "how can their dividend yield be more than any of the dividend paying stocks they own". . is this because of leverage? Or maybe capital gains? Or maybe return of capital? If I knew the answer,, it would surely help in the selection of what to own. .
Keep up the good work, thanks again, and best wishes to you.
