  • Morgan Stanley's Price Target Increase Has Helped Make Tesla A Great Short Again [View article]
This article was full of old information and false assumptions.

    1) While the 85kWh is marketing at 300 mile range, it is EPA rated at 265.
    2) the author talks about problems in v4.2 of the software, but we're already on v5.8 and the problems to which he refers are long since fixed (imagine that, a car that gets fixed automatically)
    3) supercharger volume should be compared to gas stations. This sort of shows that the author hasn't thought through the issue. Every owner has a charger at home. If you want to compare apples to apples, then there are something like 20,000 chargers deployed, one per car and then the Superchargers on top of that. In the year I've had the car, I've only used a Supercharger twice (but look forward to free road trips in the future.

It seems that a thoughtful piece on the company would get the facts right and try to understand the dynamics of the ownership experience, otherwise it comes across as just another short seller trying to flog his idea.

  • GM CEO Dan Akerson has created a small team to study Tesla (TSLA) and the potential threat it poses to the auto giant. Vice chairman Steve Girsky: "[Akerson] thinks Tesla could be a big disrupter if we’re not careful ... History is littered with big companies that ignored innovation that was coming their way." Akerson has been busy trying to speed up the pace at GM implements new technologies, and promised in March GM would launch an EV with a 200-mile range. Meanwhile, Tesla is working on lowering charging times at its supercharging stations to 5-10 minutes from 20. CTO J.B. Straubel cautions "it’s not going to happen in a year from now." [View news story]
Yeh, I don't know how one can say that Tesla isn't viable. When was the last time GM got 99 out of 100 from Consumer Reports. Where did they place in Motor Trend last year? Since when did a GM dealer have thousands of potential buyers a week walk by dealership and peak in?

I bought one and had the simplest car buying experience of my life.

Never bought a GM product though. I guess their wonderfully integrated distribution chain was just too integrated for me.

  • Tesla: A New Generation Of Competing Plug-In Luxury Hybrids Will Shrink The Niche Of The Model S [View article]
I'm an investor and Tesla owner.

Seems to me that "Logical's" basic premise is what should be "in question". Is Tesla's "niche" the expensive alternative fuel car market or is it the luxury car market.

In the press, in the numbers and amongst my luxury car buying friends Tesla is being considered alongside Mercedes, Audi, Lexus and BMW. When you meet other Model S owners its hard to find a crunchy granola type in the crowd. They're generally people who buy nice cars and want the latest thing, it's the same way they'd want a snazzy new Jag or Audi. Some of them are hard core car buffs who like it for the performance.

It's all well and good to say that Tesla will have new competitors that are hybrid, but they will also have to compete with the other luxury makers. It's a big market. I don't know if warrants a $14B valuation, but an analyst who starts out with a false premise can't possibly come to the right conclusion.

  • I'm An Irrationally Exuberant Investor In Tesla [View article]
This article gets to the heart of it. Tesla isn't just a green company, it's a company that's doing something new that's better than what's been done before.

The people who lead these companies deserve to be part of American mythology. They have names like Rockefeller, Carnegie, Ford, Gates and Jobs.

Investing in a future member of the Business Hall of Fame doesn't overcome the jealousy we might have, but it helps.
