  • Human Genome Sciences - Investors Are Speculating On A Higher Bid [View article]
Isn't GSK pretty much the only suitable bidder for this company? They may make another offer, but I'm not sure if they will ever reach a level that allows shareholders to recoup their losses.

  • General Electric (GE) will report Q1 earnings tomorrow before the market open with a conference call scheduled for 8:30 am ET (Webcast). Analysts are looking for an EPS of $0.33 on revenue of $34.7B from a wider consensus range of around $0.31 - $0.35 for its EPS, and $34.14B - $35.72B for revenue.  [View news story]
You want a 10:1 reverse split in GE to achieve a dollar target? I think some of its components are at low points in their valuations (though certainly better than in 2009) which would make splitting them off unwise for now. Think about their sale of the NBC networks to Comcast. When people look back at that in like 20 years, they will think what a bad idea it was to sell at that moment when they had almost no power. Unfortunately, GE had to make the sale at that time because of their other decisions related to GE capital, but that doesn't mean they need to make the same mistakes again.

What I do agree with you on is that their leadership is arrogant and feels no remorse for the destruction of the company over the last decade.

  • Yahoo CEO: Company Needs Better Focus [View article]
Yahoo would do a lot of good for itself if in addition to focusing on the core areas, it rebranded some of it's pages and reduced its visible affiliation with others. Part of Yahoo's problem is that it's not seen as being cool anymore, and in order to fix that it needs to build some new brands.

I like the idea. AAPL has distorted the performance over the past year of many of the funds and ETFs that I watch.

Nice article. As scientific literature becomes more and more inaccessible, plenty of opportunities will arise for market manipulation. Not many people can defend these companies because not many people understand what it is they do.

The same can be said about most things that GE makes, but that doesn't mean it won't sell.

  • Delta (DAL+2.6%) is interested in buying ConocoPhillips' (COP) idled Trainer refinery in Philadelphia as the airline aims to reduce its jet fuel costs. It would be the fist case of an airline owning a refinery and industry experts say a best-case scenario could see production starting up again as early as July.  [View news story]

  • Who are most likely to be tax evaders? The answer might come as a surprise: male, married, young and wealthy, according to a new DDB Life Style survey.  [View news story]
I wouldn't say 55k is wealthy, but I'm not surprised that someone who cheats on their taxes is also a db.

  • Though Apple and Google's TV efforts receive more headlines (I, II), Microsoft (MSFT) is quietly "winning the war for the living room," says Matt Rosoff, following Redmond's latest Xbox content deals. Microsoft now has over 40M Xbox Live users, and a company exec claims over half of the 84 hours/month the average Live user spends on the service involves watching video and listening to music.  [View news story]
There is no real skype integration in kinect for xbox (though they claim to be working on it and everyone seems to be waiting for windows 8 for this to happen). Microsoft is just ahead in content deals (Fios, Xfinity, ESPN, Hulu, Netflix, etc). None of these are really exclusive to xbox, but the build out is already there. The question is whether next generation consoles (2013 or 2014) with improved kinect features and media integration will be adopted by casual gamers because by then there will probably be an offering from Apple for an integrated tv set (probably for $1500+).

  • Savient Pharmaceuticals: Thoughts On The Chronic Refractory Gout Market [View article]
The febuxostat trial that is quoted above has some notable problems, chief among them is the fact that they are comparing a high dose of Febuxostat to a standard dose of Allopurinol. It does indeed show non-inferiority, but because Febuxostat is many times more expensive than Allopurinol, there only reason to use Febuxostat is in patients with kidney problems. No trial to date has answered the important question of whether or not febuxostat is better than an appropriately adjusted dose of allopurinol.

Krystexxa is an interesting drug because of the potential for rapid results. However, if you read through the studies of this drug, a VERY high percentage of the patients experienced gout flares during the treatment. Treatment also has a limited time window before the immune system rejects the drug and at that point, there are risks of allergic reactions. It's a difficult drug to use, and often requires a long period of observation on other alternative treatments before consideration. Krystexxa may gain some traction, but it will need time to do so.
