  • March 2013 Car Sales: Juiced By Low-Interest Loans? [View article]

Well done. I'm convinced low interest rates and increased availability of leasing are two of the most important reasons behind the increase in auto sales. I just hope the level of repos doesn't increase too much.

  • AutoNation (AN -1.2%) CEO Mike Jackson throws a bit of a scare across the automobile industry by telling CNBC (video) a fiscal cliff stalemate could strike the sector during the last ten days of the year when selling is typically high. After a good run in 2012, will the ongoing impact from Hurricane Sandy and muted consumer demand due to political tension spur a disappointing Q4 for automakers in the U.S.? [View news story]
I agree with "Tdot." If sales decline, he can say "I told you so!" I they increase? Well, its hard to agrue with improvement.

  • A deal by General Motors (GM -0.5%) to sponsor soccer juggernaut Manchester United will include seeing brand Chevrolet displayed front and center on the team's jerseys starting in the 2014/2015 season. The club has only seen four other jersey sponsors in its storied history covering 134 years. [View news story]
Mad Max, interesting comments. Just read Automotive News' comments on the deal. Seems GM not only is standing by the deal Ewanick made, but is extending it from five years to seven years! And I thought that might have been why he was fired! Go figure.

  • CarMax's CEO Discusses Q4 2012 Results - Earnings Call Transcript [View article]
CarMax did a nice job in fiscal 2012. And, when we look at the average age of vehicles currently being driven at over ten years (10.4, a record) this clearly says CarMax is dialed in on a booming market. And, with over 35% of new car buyers indicating they intend to keep their vehicle over ten years, CarMax should be strong for at least the next few years. Also, the significant increase in extended warranty sales by new car dealers should ensure that CarMax will be buying cars on the used car market in significantly better condition than in the past. And, last, but not least, consumers no longer consider a used car as "damaged goods." All of this speaks to continued growth for CarMax.

  • Detroit Uses Aid to "Open-Up" Auto Lending: Not Necessarily Good for GM [View article]
Markam, remember, GMAC said they would "accept" applicants with scores of 621. The call-back on these applications usually have so many "stips" i.e: more $ down, shorter term, lower loan -to-value, etc. that the lender can protect themselves to some degree. "Accepting" the app is only the first step in the process.

  • As Goes GM, So Goes U.S. Government Credit [View article]
Beginning a year ago, auto leases became history. All of the Detroit 3 captive lenders pulled out of leasing or made qualifying criteria much more difficult, with many of the regional lenders following suit. And, by the way, at its height, leasing only accounted for 21% of new vehicle sales. Even high-end luxury buyers/lessors are holding on to their current vehicles longer.

  • Toyota Raises Sales Forecast; Set To Topple GM [View article]
Interesting how they have accomplished so much in such a relatively short time. Just twelve years ago Toyota had just one half of GM's global sales. And, they did it focusing on quality, not numbers.
