  • Pan American Silver (PAAS -7%) is downgraded to Market Perform with a $19.50 target price (from $30) at BMO Capital, as a lack of growth and high cost structure expose shareholders to downside risk in a declining metal price environment. • It's "death bells" for commodities, says Citigroup, calling 2013 the year in which it's realized the commodity supercycle is over and a new era in which the relative performance of how "stuff" performs against each other and other assets is what matters. Specifically on oil, Citi calls Q1's move higher without merit and expects the recent downtick in prices to continue.  [View news story]
lol @ citi analysts, maybe even better fade than Gartman

  • Weakness in commodities is not a sign of a global slowdown, it's actually good for stocks, says Douglas C. Lane & Associates' Sarat Sethi. A lot of “hot money” is moving out of the sector as the dollar rallies and “stuff” gets more expensive, and its likely to flow into growth opportunities as opposed to traditionally defensive sectors like utilities and consumer staples. His recommendations: global manufacturing companies such as Danaher (DHR) and Emerson (EMR), which his firm owns, as well as transports, notably airlines.  [View news story]

  • Bank of America (BAC) has won federal judge's approval for a $2.43B settlement with investors who said the lender hid crucial information when it bought Merrill Lynch in a $50B all-stock deal in September 2008. The settlement, which is among the largest stemming from the global financial crisis, culminated from what the judge referred to as "extraordinarily hard-fought litigation."  [View news story]

  • Another Friday, another rally for well-shorted Internet stocks. Though Zynga (ZNGA +3.2%) may have benefited from news it's adding John Doerr to its board, most Internet names with large short interests that posted big gains did so in the absence of major news. Groupon (GRPN +5.9%), a frequent participant in such rallies, was among the standouts, as were Yelp (YELP +8.5%), Zillow (Z +3.8%), and OpenTable (OPEN +4.6%).  [View news story]

  • Google Glass is the new iWatch: everyone seems to be hatching plans for a competitor even before the original sees a commercial launch. Topeka's Brian White, fresh off predicting an iTV with a ring accessory will arrive, says he believes Microsoft (MSFT) is working on a set of Web-enabled glasses for a 1H14 launch. The report comes a day after Baidu confirmed it has a Google Glass-like project of its own. Separately, IDG's Agam Shah observes Windows RT tablets are being discounted left and right, raising fresh questions (previous) about the OS' future.  [View news story]

  • The SEC lets Reed Hastings off the hook for last July's Facebook post about Netflix's (NFLX) monthly streaming activity. The agency, which had sent Netflix a Wells notice in December, says it's OK for companies to "announce key information" via social media, provided "investors have been alerted about which social media will be used to disseminate such information."  [View news story]

  • Silver has slid into a bear market, down ~22% since October and settling -2.5% today at $27.24, and some analysts say the pain is just beginning. Colin Cieszynski says recent moves reflect a technical breakdown but, similar to selling pressure hitting gold, silver is losing fans as inflation fears fade. iShares Silver Trust (SLV -2.4%) has extended its pattern of stair-step declines, an ominous technical warning.  [View news story]

  • H-P's (HPQ +0.8%) internal processes are being overhauled left and right, says tech/operations chief John Hinshaw ahead of today's shareholder meeting. The changes, which cover sales, procurement, and much else, may have contributed to H-P's FQ1 EPS beat. A lot of the changes involve the use of cloud software: Hinshaw claims H-P has the world's largest Salesforce (CRM) and Workday (WDAY) implementations (ORCL software was replaced) and that using Salesforce has led to huge improvements in sales efficiency and job satisfaction.  [View news story]
