  • Salesforce (CRM) files a 14A asking investors to approve a 4:1 stock split at the company's March 20 shareholder meeting. Shares +0.6% AH after closing near their all-time high. "The Board ... believes the considerable price appreciation has made our common stock less affordable and, therefore, attractive to fewer investors," Salesforce declares, apparently with a straight face.  [View news story]

  • More on Capital One (COF): Q4 misses the mark across the board as total revenue declines by 3% Y/Y. The company says the decline was driven by higher levels of estimated uncollectible finance charges and fees in the company's Domestic Card business. Operating expenses also increased by 5% to $2.9B, due to higher year-end expense patterns and somewhat higher integration expenses. Marketing expense increased $77M in the quarter to $393M. • Market recap: Stocks advanced following talk of additional central bank stimulus from Japan, positive economic reports (I, II) and potential progress over the debt ceiling. Most S&P sectors gained, but banks lagged after BofA and Citigroup issued disappointing quarterly reports (I, II). Crude oil rose 1.3% to four-month highs amid the hostage crisis at an Algerian oil field.  [View news story]
positive economic reports? Philly fed was terrible, housing starts inflated 103k by seasonal adjustment shenanigans (?) and weekly claims # has been random and meaningless noise for last several weeks... lol

  • California is in dire fiscal straits, but tapping its Saudi Arabia-scale oil resources could wipe out the state's debt and deficits, Mark Mills writes. The Monterey shale field alone may hold 15.4B barrels of oil, rivaling America's total conventional reserves, and the overall economic benefits of opening up Monterey could reach $1T.  [View news story]

  • The Fed shouldn't even talk about halting QE until headline unemployment drops to 7.25% (it's 7.8% now), says the Boston Fed's Eric Rosengren. ZIRP, of course, will remain in place until UE hits 6.5%. If the employment picture doesn't improve, not only will the beatings continue, but Rosengren sees scope for an even-larger QE program.  [View news story]
let's keep shoveling more money from the Fed to the TBTF banks... onward to prosperity!

  • Mark Zuckerberg kicks off Facebook's (FB -0.8%) event by introducing Graph Search, a tool that allows users to make queries related to shared content. One shown example: a search for college friends who live in San Francisco. Map/photo search support is included, and there are probably some opportunities for search ads that can also leverage other Facebook data. Google (GOOG +1.3%) investors don't seem concerned - the search giant's shares have actually ticked higher. (live blog) (PR[View news story]

  • In his Q4 letter to investors, Third Point's Dan Loeb outlines his thesis for taking a stake in Herbalife (HLF). Loeb points out that the research his firm conducted showed no evidence of any pyramid scheme, and the beating the stock took at the hands of Ackman created an attractive entry point to buy the shares. By applying a modest 10-12x earnings multiple, Loeb suggests the stock's worth between $55 - 68 per share - translating to 40% - 70% upside from current levels.  [View news story]
Kudos to him... meanwhile Ackman probably made out like a bandit too while SEC is/was asleep at the wheel as usual, meanwhile small investors got put through the stress ringer, alot of panic sells in the 20's no doubt...sad

  • For the first time in nearly 6 months, Facebook (FB +3.7%) is trading above $30/share. There's no specific reason for today's move, unless one counts an invitation for a Jan. 15 event that some think could feature a smartphone announcement. Shorts have been covering at a pretty rapid clip, and recent analyst commentary has featured plenty of bullish remarks about improving mobile monetization and the impact of new ad products. Shares are now up 54% since Facebook delivered its Q3 report.  [View news story]
If they are monetizing mobile so much better, how come almost none of the used-car salesmen better known as analysts haven't been raising their estimates for 2013...?

  • Amazon Web Services (AMZN +3.6%) generated $2B in 2012 sales and will pull in $3.8B in 2013, estimates Macquarie's Ben Schachter. Others have pegged AWS' 2012 revenue at $1.5B-$2B (Amazon, in usual form, doesn't give any numbers). Schachter, who sees AWS' sales growing to $6.2B in 2014 and $8.8B in 2015 as it starts reeling in large enterprises, thinks the business would be worth anywhere from $19B-$30B ($41-$66/share) as a standalone company.
