  • Politics And The Sequester: Near-Term Impacts For The Stock Market [View article]
VXX is not an effective way for anything but a short, or a single-day trade. Only those that lack experience using it can say it's an effective hedge.

Maybe he was using the pre-earnings price, but that is much different than "off of its lows of last year". Credibility is reduced with a statement like that, and it makes it harder for me to take a writer seriously with incorrect factual statements.

"Investors shook that off in favor of the growth story and have driven the stock up to over 80% off of its lows of last year".

The stock was at $52.81 on 8/3/12. From ~53 to ~175... that's like, an over 200% move off of last year lows. Why do you say 80%?? How can you get something so simple, found so easily, wrong?

VXX all time low? No kidding, it's supposed to continually hit all time lows as it is a defective, aim-for-zero product.

If you decide to keep holding, consider covered calls. Maybe go in the money for more premium and protection in case it keeps dropping.

  • The Five Day Rule - 2013 Version [View article]
I think the Fiscal Cliff holding down the markets during the last week of December and then being resolved had more to do with the 5 days being as positive as they were. I wouldn't translate that into a big positive year.

  • Protect Your Portfolio Against Volatility [View article]
January is too soon, equities might not selloff like that in 14 days and puts may lose all value quick. Why not go till March, and capture the volatility that will almost certainly occur due to the debt ceiling super cliff ?

  • House Republicans - including House Majority Leader Eric Cantor - are reportedly overwhelmingly opposed to the fiscal cliff deal approved by the Senate. The House appears poised to amend the deal and send it back to the Senate, setting up a legislative high-wire act. [View news story]
There are 3 more cliffs in the next three months, with opportunity to bring spending cuts with them (debt ceiling, budget, sequestration). The key is to start working on that tomorrow (or as soon as possible), and not wait until we are already over the cliff and desperately trying to breathe to start working.
