  • House Republicans won't bring their "Plan B" tax-cut proposal to a vote tonight, as Speaker John Boehner says he doesn't have the votes; the House will recess until after Christmas. DJIA futures slip 0.2%. Boehner: "Now it is up to the president to work with Senator Reid on legislation to avert the fiscal cliff." Updated: S&P 500 e-Mini futures dive, limit down. [View news story]
I don't know what futures you're looking at. Still horribly bad.

AAPL went back up to 525 that day as a reaction to fiscal cliff talks--the whole market went higher. Otherwise, it would have closed on the lows.

  • U.S. Treasury Bonds: The Short Of 2013? [View article]
It was the short of 2011 and the short of 2012.... maybe, just maybe, the Fiscal Cliff clown show will make the world realize we really can't pay all of this debt back and TLT will start to fall.

  • XIV And ZIV Are Huge Success Stories 2 Years After Launching [View article]
QE forever has placed a sort of ceiling on volatility, at least that's my theory. You could be waiting a long time for 2008 / 2011 style volatility to return, while these products will keep churning higher.

Keep in mind if we go over the cliff then this may not matter.

  • Black Friday sales slipped 1.8% to $11.2B, research firm ShopperTrak estimates, although traffic rose 3.5% to 307.7M store visits. One reason for the revenue decline is that Thanksgiving openings took some of the Black Friday sales away, as did retailers offering early deals on their Web sites. Another factor might have been the constant adjusting of prices by retailers as they tried to match or undercut each other. [View news story]
Where I live Black Friday happened Thursday this time around. This statistic needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

  • A Rough Year For Traders, But One Strategy Accurately Predicted The Swings [View article]
170% on an unknown Black Swan (credit downgrade). I can't invest waiting on a Black Swan to happen. Fiscal Cliff is a known entity and the markets are pricing it in right now, with a low VIX.

  • Carl Icahn tells CNBC he has thought about making a hostile bid for Netflix (NFLX) but says he doesn't think he "would ever get it," explaining that he wouldn't be able to pay as much for Netflix as a "synergistic buyer." Icahn also can't understand why Netflix isn't an acquisition target, given that - in his opinion - it's undervalued, its 27M subscribers, which make it difficult to compete with, and low interest rates. [View news story]
Carl Icahn is delusional. NFLX is overvalued and going down.

Remember that you can have UVXY fall alongside the market, and you can have increased volatility (UVXY up) while the market goes up as well. They are not entirely correlated.
