  • The Best Contrarian Macro Investment: Russia? [View article]
Hello George, re Glazyev's article, I'm sure the translator does more or less of a fair job to understand the general idea of the essay, it's rather long to do a diligent translation, so would a thesis do?

George, appreciate your updates on the subject.

The thing is that Russian real estate market (and by that I mostly mean - Moscow) is a stubborn little donkey. Indeed in USD-denominated terms, the prices have plummeted, yet in RUB they still remain about the same, which brings some opportunity to those with some foreign currency in their pockets. The impact of the negative factors has not caught up yet with most of population, so I guess there is more to come to estate prices in the upcoming year, when the RUB depreciation, business deceleration and growing inflationary pressure will make some serious corrections.

George, I was referring to news like these: http://reut.rs/VicMLS

Interesting picture of how the balance of Central Bank of Russia (CBRF) is changing over time from being a mere currency exchange office to being more dependent on local emission (sorry for lack of translation):

    - Cyan line are foreign assets
    - Yellow line is a RUB-denominated funding to the banking system - it is 25% and around 5.4 trillion RUB (~150 bln USD) - which I personally think is still a joke for a sustainable development. The remaining demand probably needs to be filled on external capital markets, as CBRF doesn't have the ability to "turn on the printer"

Dear George, thank you for the insightful summary and a baker's dozen of macro-economic reasons. How do you evaluate the effect on Russian financial system with private institutions excluded from borrowing long-term capital (maturity of more than 90 days)? Seems that you point out austerity and squeezing monetary supply as advantages for bond vigilantes, but how will the high borrowing rates affect the local business?

  • S&P cuts Russian rating to one notch above junk [View news story]
You both have sense and reason in your comments. Additionally CBRF has raised the rate from 7% to 7.5%, meaning to tackle inflation as a primary target. So borrowing will get tough both on external markets and internally.

All Russian assets investors should also pay attention to today's Central Bank of Russia session in regards to any changes to the monetary policy and measures to drive the liquidity for the banking sector. Although the policy rate is expected to remain the same.

Please do remind me whether the citizens of Sudetenland had a Public of Referendum back in 1938? So please refrain from throwing such statements in the air further on, even though they are backed by CNN, NBC and other Faux News-alikes... I am not here to argue, nor to persuade nobody... the whole thing just makes me facepalm all the time.

There the Mass Media goes once again... Let's see how those dirty bastards "pro-Russian separatist militias, who refuse to vacate government buildings" match against those lovely "pro-Ukrainian peaceful protesters (armed and defended, burning tires), who refuse to vacate government buildings". The hell, there are all burning tires...must be some kind of air in Ukraine that needs some burnt rubber along the oxygen, nitrogen...
