  • Building A Do-It-Yourself Dividend Portfolio - Part 6: Technology [View article]
As a young investor with 38 years until target retirement I intend to follow Morningstar's asset allocation model for 2050. I am looking for information on the proper way to allocate sectors among my U.S. stock and Foreign stock holdings. Using a mix of individual stocks, ETF's and mutual funds. Just thought I throw this out there to help get the discussion going.

Could you write a series based on asset allocation. This particular series has been a great tool in identifying a starting point for due diligence on individual companies within sectors. Perhaps next you could address the strategic allocation of sectors within a portfolio. Thank you.

    George,

Great article. As a newbie to options could you help me understand one question: does it matter what the expiration date is for the options used in this strategy? Usually I see higher premiums for further dated options. Is that what you use?

    Stephen,

How do you think ABT fares against it's competitors and what is your opinion of the Abbvie spin-off? I have been trying to find more details about this and just read a good article written by James Shell: http://seekingalpha.co...
If you find the time or interest would you mind writing an article on this topic?

  • Don't Blunder Like Buffett: How Rookie IRA Investors Can Make Him Pay Dividends [View article]
Wow. It's ironic that your "call sign" and focus of your articles is Rookie Ira Investor. That's exactly where I am today. I have over $20k split between my wife's Roth and mine. I try to think of them as one portfolio. Right now I am sitting on some cash waiting for the "pullback" I keep reading about while I keep an eye on several companies waiting for yields to hit over 4%. This strategy is based on the articles I have read from contributors like Five Plus Investor, David Van Knapp, and Dividend Growth Machine. All the while I have been trying to learn about options. What's your take on the ABT spinoff? I have been trying to get more info on this as ABT is a stock that I follow and waiting for the pullback to purchase. I read "Update: The Conoco Phillips/Phillips 66 Spin-Off And A Buying Opportunity For Conoco Phillips- by David Shell" and it was the best explanation of a that spinoff that I could find. I went long COP before reading his article. Now I am debating the benefit of buying ABT before the spinoff or after. Your thoughts?

  • P&G A Nice Gamble For Your IRA - How To Ride Its 56-Year Winning Streak [View article]
    Rookie,

My buddy and I have been studying the series 7 from STC. There are two dvd's in the series that cover options but we have some unanswered questions. This is why it is so awesome that you keep writing about them. This is also why so many of my questions are probably no brainer's for a lot of people. Either way thanks for your patience. In your article you wrote:
"If the stock fell below $65 at January expiration, you would have another 100 shares put to you, at which point, taking into account the premium received when you sold the call and the put, your average basis for the 200 shares, you now owned would be $63.20 and you would also collect the dividend on the 100 shares you bought to open the trade."
My question is: say we don't want to be assigned the second lot of PG shares. As the price gets closer to the $65 expiration is there a way to cancel out the put we wrote? This way we can still collect the premium and not be assigned the shares?
This is similar to my question in your article -Don't Blunder Like Buffett: How Rookie IRA Investors Can Make Him Pay Dividends- where you highlighted the bull put spread.

    Rookie,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. You are going to get a lot more in the future!
"You decide to use the spread technique to sell not one but 2 $70 cash secured puts"
So by buying the long put am I now able to write a short put against it? Is that how I am able to write 2 $70 puts on $7000?
