    Phil,

If you confiscated all of the assets of the top 1%, you don't put a dent in the deficits. The point of no/lower taxes is not to start class warfare, but to take the fuel away from the fire.

As has been suggested many times, if one thinks they are under-taxed, or that govt is an efficient spender, voluntarily send more to them.

Its worse than that. The "managers" make promises to certain constituents in return for campaign contributions. Of course this has all been written about before.

And, they can sell bonds (instead of collecting taxes) with an almost always perfect credit rating.

    Seth,

This kind of mis-representation will cause a problem if a fiduciary led a client long, the market tanks later, and this news was shown to be a warning sign.

It appears Mario Monti is just out with an austerity and tax evasion package that predicts recession in Italy for 2011/2012 as a result, enroute to a balanced budget in 2013 and zero growth.

    ajp,

As I have posted. Your reforms are politically practically impossible and the benies are legally contractual. These benies are considered vested. You can't just pull them back.

Now, the fact that the future promises were ill got gains is another matter. Some Ponzi schemes while crazy and unethical are still technically legal.

Doesn't Italy alone have something like 20% of their debt to roll over early 2012?

  • Bond Rate Pigs Will Get Slaughtered [View article]
Here's the problem that I see. What will you do in 5 years? In 10 years? How did you know to load the boat when you did and why did you have firepower at the time. You are trying to time the market and interest rates. Back in 2007/2008, I recommended 5% CDs and was laughed at.

I could have bought a 15% 30-year back in the 1980's but i didnt have any money,

    Wade,

I see low rates as a much bigger problem. They are a BIG drain for many (savers, pension funds that are already strained), and at these levels not much left of a safety net if we have to lower more. Ben should have left them alone!

As I have posted before, and in the news even today. Patent wars will be key for AAPL IMO.

And, the news late Friday night our time out of China worries me more than Europe.
