  • I Bought Apple [View article]
No easy file system for the iPhone and iPad is worse.
Google and the cloud -- a wave that is still forming.

Apple, like Microsoft, and IBM before them had their chance.
It was winner take all ...

  • Apple Earnings: How To Tackle Saturation In The High-End Smartphone Market? [View article]
I thought this space would be winner take all and Apple would win.
Samsung and BYOD are among the surprises that in many ways don't make a lot of sense but that's what makes a marketplace.

  • Apple To Stop Buying Processors From Samsung, But TSMC Might Not Deliver [View article]
The "big boys" seem to feel they have to partner and compete at the same time. Not just Apple and Samsung.

Makes investing in around these guys all the more difficult. The cross-currents are many and complex.

Who (and why) at Apple did not see this conflict coming?
They setup and aided a competitor?

Yup, that's the issue. I thought Apple would be anointed the defacto smartphone/tablet provider. Why BlackBerry and Microsoft continue to persist is even crazier.

Apple says it is hard to make a great smartphone.
    Hard for who?

For income investors, you might need at least a 4% yield before big money comes in for the div alone.

Apple phones and tablets also need a real, easy to use file system. At the risk of competing with their Mac line.

If they don't do it, someone else will.

    Based on what?
The smartphone and tablet price war is just beginning.
Same thing happened to PCs 10, 15 yrs ago.

I reiterate, Apple needs proprietary, recurring rev, killer apps!
As it stands, the devices are very reliable, the interface so-so, but real world consumers willing and able to jump for just a slightly larger screen.

The brick and mortar stores could soon become just a "brick" for Apple. A monster fixed expense. Our local Apple store is now mostly/entirely blue t-shirts with the occasional senior looking to just chat and get free tech support.

Even Costco has mini telecom stores and kiosks within.

OK, so what? What will investors as a group do as result.
Is this stock $80 or $800?

Appears smartphone market is at or near saturation.
In my focus groups, not one new Apple convert, but also no defectors yet either.

I do see though Apple users carrying both iPhone and Galaxy. Never thought I would see that. Some corps have the Galaxy as standard issue now -- never thought I would see that.
Some corps are supporting both -- never thought I would see that.

Appears though the line has been drawn at two -- Apple and Samsung (like Hertz and Avis). Not good for BlackBerry and Microsoft.

I thought this market would be winner take all, so on balance a negative for Apple.

Not sure I would bet the store on "rounded corners". A bigger/deeper moat would be better.

Like Tesla, Apple will need to decide if they want a niche with high margins or try to take it all, sacrifice margins, and make it up in volume. Or a combination of both.

What customers and shareholders do as a result is hard to gauge. In part, that's why I say the stock is not investable. Way too many moving parts. At least you have a 50/50 chance though. :)

I wouldn't call small form factor computers, some with cell phone capability, revolutionary. The fact that they caught on was obviously a very good call by Steve Jobs.

Apple will be a victim of its own success similar to Microsoft.
With tens of millions of devices in use, backward compatibility becomes an issue and a big hassle. Cut the cord on the existing base to move forward "forcing" an upgrade and they scream foul.

Maintain backward compatibility and the new models look just so-so.
