  • Micron Technology: It's The DRAM Stupid [View article]
Phred for "president". Am greatly impressed by your ability to ramble through so much information and find what is fact and what is fiction. I have a master's degree in electrical engineering and once was able to comprehend fairly obtuse notions. Your explanation of the downside associated with the Micron convertibles sounds "right on" but I still am unable to understand all the contorted ramifications of that situation. In any event, thanks for your efforts, and keep it coming!

  • With The Declining Trend In Coal, Is CSX Still A Buy? [View article]
Coal shipments have been increasing in my area in WV....all winter one train per week....now one per day and sometimes two.

  • Going Over Alpha Natural Resources [View article]
Anecdotal comment....I live in WV where CSX hauls ANR coal to the eastern ports.
During the winter, maybe one trip per week....now one every day and sometimes two. Other mines use CSX but I'm quite sure ANR is shipping their share. Hear the train blowing for the crossing as we speak!

  • Micron Technology Set To Have Another Great Year [View article]
Too complicated for me to understand but I noticed the sharp drop and associated it with the options expiration. Couldn't resist buying. Thanks for an attempt to explain such a contorted process.

  • CSX Corporation - Recent Dip In Stock Price Provides An Opportunity [View article]
Saw a mile long coal train, CSX, at Hinton, WV yesterday heading to some port in Virginia, probably on to Germany or India. Things may be picking up in the coal arena. ANR also ships coal by CSX and the frequency of shipments past my home is increasing.
    Long CSX and ANR.

  • The launch of the first CPUs based on AMD's 28nm Steamroller architecture, codenamed Kaveri, could be delayed until Feb. '14, PC industry sources tell Digitimes. Previous roadmaps indicated Kaveri, which is aimed at mid-range desktops and mid-range/high-end notebooks, would launch in late 2013. AMD plans to launch two other 28nm CPU platforms by 1H14: a Steamroller-based server CPU line codenamed Berlin, and an ultrabook CPU line codenamed Beema. Beema uses AMD's existing Jaguar architecture, and stands to replace the recently-launched Kabini. Intel (INTC) launched its power-saving 22nm Haswell CPUs last month; 14nm Broadwell CPUs are expected next year. [View news story]

  • More on Evercore's downgrade of Intel (INTC -3.9%): Analyst Patrick Wang is worried about still-weakening PC trends, peaking chip prices, and the potential of Atom CPUs to cannibalize Core CPUs. Meanwhile, fellow Evercore analyst Rob Chira now expects PC sales to fall 10% Y/Y, worse than a prior 6%. Citi's Glen Yeung, who has cut his Q2 Intel revenue forecast to $12.61B from $12.9B (consensus is at $12.89B), says notebook production has been weak and Intel's back-end (assembly/test) supplier orders were flat to down 5% in Q2. Looks like they are "doing" IBM today. Probably not illegal but not "right"!

  • Resource companies are cut across the board at Credit Suisse to reflect lower prices forecast by its commodities team. Freeport-McMoRan's (FCX +1.1%) price target is lowered to $38 from $40 to reflect 2013's EPS estimate cut to $2.81/share from $3, and 2014 to $2.59 from $3.21. Coal stock (BTU, ANR, ACI, CNX) price targets are slashed as well, as are aluminum producers NOR and CENX. Lastly, Stillwater Mining's (SWC +4.1%) price target is cut to $12 from $15 thanks to lower forecast palladium and platinum prices. [View news story]
Has anyone heard the government plans to prohibit overseas coal shipments? Suisse made it easier for the "shorts" to cover without causing even a "dead cat" bounce. Lots of maneuvering in the markets these days.

  • Morgan Stanley defends Walter Energy (WLT) after today's sharp loss, saying potential upside from 52-week lows is too big to ignore and that WLT can work with its banks to obtain covenant relief with sufficient liquidity (earlier). The firm thinks shares could jump 200% to $35 even if WLT announced an equity offering that increased share count by a third, which the company has not indicated it was considering. WLT +3% AH. [View news story]
Morgan Stanley was the bank involved in trying to refinance WLT's debt. Probably would have been a good move given the low interest rates. Since MS was involved in the failed effort, wonder how much credence to give their pronouncements.

  • Worth noting: Short interest on Walter Energy (WLT) rose 13.8% to 17.05M shares through the end of May, to 27.47% of its current float and the largest number of shares sold short in the past year. Before today's move, shares were down nearly 14% and it might be reasonable to speculate that shorts increased positions somewhat over the last two weeks. Shares are still halted, with the stock down 17.4%[View news story]
80 year old retiree from American Electric Power. In markets since 1970 and have had many character building experiences. Live near CSX rail line where ANR coal is transported to east coast shipping terminals.

With ETFs linking all the coal companies and algorithimic trading that all take their cues from somewhat similar data, the simultaneous drop is not too surprising. I decided a buying opportunity but possibly wrong! Bought BTU and ANR. Do not like ACI.
