  • The Cyprus Card - Well Played By The EU [View article]
You assume too much and give too much credit to the intellect of the eurocrats.
First of all, Merkel has elections coming up and was in no position to offer anything else than a bail-in. The eurocrats clearly miscalculated as to what the reaction was to the bail-in of small depositors (< euro 100,000). Now they are backtracking.

Secondly, it would be an unwise move of the eurocrats to anger Russia by "sticking it" to them. Whether the Russians are pot-committed or not. Don't forget that Russia can easily "stick it back" to Europe by cranking the gas price to compensate for their loss in the Cyprus -EU banking system. And yes, this HAS happened in the past.
Sure, the EU might hold the house advantage in this poker game, but Russia supplies the heat. And no one likes to play if the poker table is freezing.

  • Some money managers are getting excited by the latest holy grail for investors - using gross profitability as a basis for picking stocks. Research from University of Rochester's Robert Novy-Marx shows that cheap "quality" plays outperformed the overall market by over four percentage points a year from 1963-2011. "You get much more informative signals about the health of firms" this way, says Novy-Marx. [View news story]
    Why 1963-2011? How about 1929-1945.

  • Is The Herbalife Squeeze Coming? [View article]
Do you think naked shorting is involved as well? Looking at the data furnished by Yahoo, I see that 116% of the shares is held by funds and 12% by insiders. Adds up to 128%. Technically impossible.

According to Yahoo itself, the P/E of YHOO is < 7 while ROE > 29%. Seems like a buy.

  • Why Argentina Will Default In 2013 [View article]
There is a serious risk of hyperinflation if Argentina defaults. More so if Argentina no longer will be able to sell dollar dominated bonds, but peso bonds only.

Illiquid after-hour quotes can easily be manipulated by shorts. I guess they hope that longs will panic and dump their shares when they see the negative print.

That's how "analysts" make money these days: set an unrealistic high EPS, go short the stock, and dole out one-liners like "HFC misses estimates!"
