  • Apple At $530: Nothing Has Fundamentally Changed [View article]
I think selling put spreads here is the play to pocket some change if AAPL looks to move sideways for a while. Thoughts?

  • The Real Way Apple Can Make You 'Wealthy' [View article]
For whatever reason (mostly psychological I think) I havemostly been a buyer of options (generally ITM calls). I have had many wins but the few losses have eaten up much of my profits. My problem is not knowing when to exit the trade. I get greedy and hold profitable positions too long then get caught on a drop. Or I am stubborn and don't exit an unprofitable soon enough. In hindsight, most of my major mistakes have been holding when I should have sold. My other primary downfall is taking on too much risk. I am beginning to transition to being more of a seller than buyer of options.

Thanks for the feedback. I would normally sell puts short term and buy calls for the longer term for the reasons you've stated but I think I went longer term on these puts because I think there a greater chance AAPL pulls back in the short term than in the long term. I guess that I just have a strong conviction that AAPL will be above $600 at some point between now and the end of the year (even if there are some near-term pullbacks) and I can close the trade out profitably. If AAPL plummets in the near-term it will be an excruciating experience. I agree with that. We'll see how it goes.

I bought AAPL on the pullback before earnings and sold after earnings because I didn't want to allocate such a large portion of my trading account to AAPL. Then I sold Jan 13 575/600 bull put spreads for a credit of $12k. Max risk is about $12k. I like the trade. Thoughts?

Thanks for your feedback. It's very helpful. One thing to note, Schwab recently told me that in the near future Schwab was going to expand what they allowed in IRA accounts.

    Bill,
Thanks. I'll follow up on the margin interest issue and get clarification. I'm also going to check out Options Express more closely. I do not really use any of Schwab's other services or seek their advice anyway.
    Thanks again.

To Schwab's credit, they called me and told me that, given my options trading activity, I might want to consider moving my accounts to OptionsExpress. I don't have a negative view toward Schwab albeit they are not the cheapest.

How do you guys like OptionsExpress? I use Schwab and have thought about transitioning to OE.

Yea, I'm fairly certain that my broker charges me too if I dip into margin for a naked put. I'm using their money to secure the put so they charge me interest. I understand that I'm using it in a different way than I would be if I went long but to them I'm still leveraging their money so they charge me. I'm almost positive. BTW, I use Schwab.

Why? Is it because you think the stock may crater?

    Bill,
Just to clarify, are you saying that if you use margin to cover naked puts sold (effectively a cash secured put sell using the brokerage's money) you are not charged interest on the margin usage?
