  • Netbook Sales Cannibalizing PC Revenues  [View article]
Netbooks are getting more expensive, while laptops are getting cheaper. Hasn't Katie noticed that netbooks are getting larger and larger? They're are encroaching on low-end laptops. Dell is about to release a 12" netbook. Heck, that's a laptop.

  • End of the Line for Apple's FireWire [View article]
Interesting that it was not mentioned anywhere, but in some ways, Apple knifed its own baby. How so? Well, it was the original iMac from 10 years ago, that intro'd USB to the mass market. Until then, USB was having a hard time getting any traction. Apple dropped its ADB connectors for USB, and everyone had to get USB mice, and USB keyboards and USB printers and so on. So if FW has died in the consumer arena, Apple can thank itself for bringing about that change 10 years ago.

Pro models get FW. non-Pro models do not. non-Pro models like the Macbook have 13" screens, 1280x800, which are really too small to do serious FCP editing. Surely, a Pro can afford the amazing $2000 MBP? They can even get it refurb'd in a month or so for $1800, most likely. It'll have the bitchen graphics card too, just like a Pro model should have.

What Apple has done, is drop FW for those who manage their harddrive with FW bootups. I do that, but my Macs laptops are both 5 years old. At the consumer level, FW has been dying a slow death. Apple dropped FW sync from its iPods a while back, and the iPhone lost FW power, in the 2nd generation. So, while FW is better than USB, it's become the Sony Beta to VHS; however it will live on just like Sony Beta at the professional level.

  • Is the Notebook Market Slowing Down?  [View article]
ThinkPanmure?!? They don't even cover Apple. At least, not officially, is this some guy's blog? The guy has NEVER been on an Apple conference call. And, he doesn't seem to even factor in iPhone's deferred revenues which should have normalized by 2009, in his 2009 eps numbers. What a joke.

  • Does a Mobile Internet Devices Market Exist? [View article]
Well, it's always all about the definition, isn't it?

I think Apple designed a MID, with its iPhone, but squeezed it into the cellphone category, exactly for the reason Dean cited. The MID market just isn't that big yet. The cellphone market is huge. Which one is a niche, and which one isn't?

As for my ideal device that isn't a desktop, laptop, or cellphone? I'd like something like the OLPC, 2nd gen mockup, where the touchscreen is on both sides of the fold, but smaller of course. In fact, I'd take the iPhone size and shape, and clamshell it, so that it unfolded giving you double the touchscreen, for when you wanted to surf the net, work on spreadsheets. Of course, when you flipped it closed, it would appear just like the iPhone does now. Interestingly, Apple has patented something like this, so I'm hopeful in a couple years we'll see something like this. Something small enough to be a phone, but also unfolds to be something that can replace a Nokia N810 or Kindle, or Netbook.
