The problem with using "peak oil" to justify an investment in oil company stocks is similar to using the "too big to fail" backstop to justify an investment in banking stocks: even if it's true, you can still lose. Peak oil does not automatically translate into a happy story for shareholders. Some companies will start running into production problems (cost runups) or just flat out run out of reserves before others do. Do you really want to risk being a shareholder on the first company to run out of oil?
