  • "It's not an iPad competitor or alternative. It's not the same kind of device at all. And whatever it is, it's a bad version of it," writes Instapaper creator Marco Arment in a scathing review of the Kindle Fire (AMZN). GigaOm's Kevin Tofel feels differently after a 30 minute test run, saying for $199, it's a nice device to enjoy media. "Did you do this to your Kindle Fire?" asks Om Malik.  [View news story]
    The reviews-- on Amazon? Hmmm......

  • Our infrastructure is in crisis, and the federal government has to step up and do something to fix it, says former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell. Many of the problems aren't local, but regional in nature and need a federal approach. His big government fix? Create a National Infrastructure Bank and pass a transportation bill that will pump around $200B a year into the bank over the next 6 years to fund improvements. (video)  [View news story]
America's roads and bridges are unsafe and a DISGRACE. Where's the pride, people? The Gov't has a role in infrastructure. I don't see Shell oil stepping up and rebuilding roads all by its lonesome. Should we all go Ayn Randian and put in a toll booth every mile along Route 66?

  • Social Networking Is A Technique, Not A Place [View article]
Right on-- it's execution-- not "birth order" that breeds success. It's also important for the WORLD to be ready for your innovation. The Mac was not very successful early on because people had simple needs and thought of computers as glorified typewriters. As needs become more complex, Macs continue to offer more capabilities.

Facebook and Linkedin don't appeal to me as investments. they have shallow "moats", and FB has the added burden that all of their customers totally DESPISE the company because of their constant sleazy cheats around privacy. When your customers hate you, it does not bode well.

AMZN has an obscene P/E and they are stupidly moving AWAY from the one thing they do really, really well-- shipping real, physical objects (not downloads) to your door-- books, CD's, printers, cameras. ANYBODY can do downloads (and others-- like iTunes-- do that better than AMZN....).

  • Is The Smart Money Getting Out Of Apple? [View article]
Another alarmist rant. Apple has essentially zero P/E (accounting for their cash) and a mere 5% computer marketshare. MS Windows has a worldwide marketshare at LEAST in the high eighties and it sucks and hasn't any kind of semi-meaningful upgrade since Windows XP. I have a big chunk of my net worth in AAPL and I keeping looking for SOME convincing sign that I should sell. I haven't seen any.

  • Apple's Tim Cook Should Be More Of An Autocrat [View article]
"Genentech was/is the epitome of a growth company"
"was"-- they got bought out by Roche. They are essentially defunct.

  • Apple's Tim Cook Should Be More Of An Autocrat [View article]
As a general rule, I'm against general rules. Art is a smart guy and most companies DO separate the Chairman function from the CEO function. Cook may have WANTED it this way. I'm all for "wait and see".

  • State of Nebraska to Play Major Role in Defining New Keystone XL Route Away From the Sandhills [View article]
You need to read up on shale oil; how dirty it is, and how it costs a lot of energy to prepare it vs "regular" petroleum.

It would totally suck if the crooked politicians in Nebraska let the pipeline proceed.

  • Explaining Apple's Momentum [View article]
The "Fire" is a joke and may vex makers of weak tablets (Samsung, etc), but it is of no concern to Apple.

  • Kindle: Amazon.com's Razor And Blades [View article]
    "Currently Amazon has no competition"

Nonsense. AMZN has NO MOAT. Zero; None. You can get music and movies and books on iTunes. You can get E-books on Barnes and Noble. The only place where AMZN wins big is when they sell physical objects they have to ship to you; they do this very well. On "virtual" objects, they have no winning path to secure an advantage.

  • Amazon Could Drop To $100, Apple Rise To $600 In 2012 [View article]
AAPL stock is almost free now, and has been for a LONG time. Subtract out Apple's cash-on-hand, and it's a miracle the stock isn't over $1000.

  • Is It Time To Short Apple? [View article]
That's also the way I work: hold onto/accumulate a good stock until disturbing trend lines emerge. They haven't for AAPL. I'm not spooked, for example, by the fact that GIVING away tons of Android phones artificially boosts their marketshare; enough people will want a quality phone and get an iPhone.

"MSFT is .... losing market share to AAPL" A long-term trend that can only accelerate.

  • Is Best Buy Eating Amazon.com's Lunch? [View article]
"Amazon does NOT show some kind of incredible advantage there"

How much of that is because they waste a ton of money on stupid stuff, like the Kindle?

I like AMZN as a shopping destination, but I think the stock is an unexploded bomb.
