Clearwire (CLWR) says it board of directors recommends shareholders approve the Sprint (S) offer to buy the company for $3.40 per share. A voting date is set for May 31. [View news story]
well they approved it for 2.97...big news here lol
Sprint is making it easy for CLWR share holders to vote yes by topping the Dish bid. It is a psychological measure to do it on vote day. Many shareholders will see it is clearly (no pun intended) the best offer to save them from bankruptcy and having most common wiped out for a total loss. So basically it's Sprint @ 3.40 or a total loss.
Sprint (S) raises its offer for Clearwire (CLWR) to $3.40/share ahead of today's shareholder vote on a $2.97/share offer, which was widely expected to be shot down. The revised offer, which trumps Dish's (DISH) $3.30/share bid and has been sent to Clearwire's board for review, is said to have the support of Comcast, Intel, and Bright House, who collectively own 26% of Clearwire shares not held by Sprint. Nonetheless, Clearwire +6.1% to $3.46, above the offer price. Sprint +1.1%. (previous) [View news story]

Why I'm Not Buying Shares Of Sprint [View article]
Although it is not officially launched yet, Im starting to get LTE in my neighborhood (NYC, NY). When I get it it has been very fast (20+MBS Down, 6+MBS Up). When a city like NYC is launched it should be a big deal for S. The draw here is watching completion of mergers and NV project and ultimately a FD-LTE roll out. S business should grow just as others, who derive more revenue from declining wire svcs, will shrink. A return to overall profitability (18 months in some scenarios) will be a huge catalyst.
If Sprint can pull off this turn-around, and end up with a wireless network that pulls down 2-5x the speed of current 4g (ie. they will be the first '5g' network), it will be a game-changer. Hesse will go down in telecom history books as a genius. S shareholders will be very, very happy people in 18 months or so.

If everything works out for Sprint (SB and CLWR purchases, Network Vision build-out continues ahead of schedule, subscriber numbers continue to grow) this stock is a buy and could easily return 50% or more again this year. There is definitely risk, but so far it is looking like all that will happen. With greater risk comes greater return.
CES phone news roundup: 1) Huawei is trying to one-up Samsung's 5.5" Galaxy Note II by launching the 6.1" Ascend Mate. Will consumers finally reject a phone for being too big? 2) Vizio, bane of TV brands worldwide, is releasing 2 Android devices - one with a 5" 1080p display, another with a 4.7" display and unibody design. Given Vizio's track record, expect pricing to be aggressive. 3) Alcatel (ALU) is reaffirming its smartphone commitment by launching 3 new Android models, one of which has an OLED display and is just 6.45mm thick. 4) Sprint (S) says its first Windows Phone 8 devices will arrive this summer, courtesy of Samsung and HTC. Update: Vizio has also announced Android tablets powered by Nvidia's Tegra 4 processor. [View news story]
Random thoughts:
If it can't fit in your pocket, to me it's not a 'portable' phone. I'd rather have a cell chip i could move back and forth from my phone and into my laptop than to carry one of these oversized phone/undersized tablet devices.
Vizio is awesome. I've had one of their app/net enabled TV for years now. I just wish it had a built in browser (maybe the newer ones do?).
Crest Financial, which owns 8% of Clearwire (CLWR), intends to ask the FCC to block Sprint's (S) acquisition of the approximately 50% of Clearwire it doesn't own and the sale of 70% of Sprint to Japan's Softbank. Crest says the $2.2B Sprint-Clearwire deal "grossly undervalues Clearwire" and therefore the operator's spectrum holdings, which would hurt government revenue from auctions of licenses. The Crest request would add to one from Dish (DISH). [View news story]
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. They are the ones whose approval will allow this purchase.

A lesson to all. Whenever you go long you should utilize a stop-loss order. I have never lost more than 7% on a common trade.

I don't see FCC blocking this deal. The offer was at a premium to Market Value. Not long before their offer CLWR was trading under under $1.

If you liked S in 2012, you will love it in 2013: The finishing of their LTE buildout; The completion of deals with CLWR and SB; And the very possible return to profitability. If all these come together in 2013, S can easily outperform again.
