  • Seadrill's Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Three Months [View article]
Wouldn't bother me in the least if they haven't spent a cent on a share buyback, and it shouldn't bother you. There could be other and better opportunities to spend that money in the next few months. Acquisitions and/or retiring debt come to mind.

They made a move that they felt was necessary, just as RIG is trying to do something similar. I'd much prefer that a stronger SDRL emerge from this oil downturn than a weaker one that put a couple bucks in my pocket.

  • Apple's Dirty Little Rare Earth Secret [View article]
Apple Pay gets Apple a small amount of revenue from the banks since the banks have will have lower losses from stolen credit cards, etc. It also makes iOS products even more attractive to buyers of mobile devices.

Tim Cook may very well be the executive to push Apple far higher than Jobs could have. Time will tell, but he seems to be making the right moves now.

And where would Avalon and all the dozens of other miners and would-be miners get their ores processed?????

BTW, Lynas has access to deposits of the heavy REEs.

There are a lot of miners or companies that plan to mine REEs, but there aren't many outside of China who can refine REEs. However those that have spent multi--millions to develop facilities to produce the actual REEs (Lynas , for example) have had very limited success. Have you looked at the price of LYSDY lately?

It's a potential problem for a very wide range of industries that use REEs. Various of these rare earths are used in all sorts of applications. The prices from the Chinese have prevented competitors outside China from becoming successful -- although quite a few have tried.

  • Seadrill: Another Temporary Setback To Buy [View article]
"In addition the author, and others not only recommended the stock back in August but also while oil was continuing to drop all the way down week after week -- he was telling us to catch a falling knife -- how stupid. Readers should be aware of this."

What an absurd comment! Oil goes up and down: Brent was higher on 10/2/14 ($91.29) than it was on 6/26/12 ($90.19), for example. It appears that nearly everyone was caught by surprise -- including major investors with millions of dollars invested in oil.

Maybe the author should have been the one who predicted the sudden drop in oil prices. He could have then warned SDRL, RIG, PACD, ORIG, VTG and others and prevented a lot of losses for us investors.

You're right, they should have forecast the precipitous drop in the price of oil and the many ramifications.

Yeah, Greece is far enough away from Russia that Putin won't come after them.

If I felt I didn't own enough and thought the price was going much higher, PoG's plan would make a lot of sense.

  • Seadrill to guarantee North Atlantic Drilling bond [View news story]
I, for one, am glad that JF anticipated the collapse in oil and quickly took action to protect the viability of SDRL. It may have been an unpopular move, but it likely means a healthier SDRL when things settle down. I took some tax losses, but I'll buy some back after that 30 day period passes.

An article in today's WSJ says that Schlumberger has acquire a minority stake in Russia's largest onshore drilling company. Looks like some deals with Russia are OK.
