  • Apple Watch: 3 Things You May Want To Know [View article]
Alex, I have a simple question for you to check out if you will. The Watch is designed to be paired with an iPhone, but does it have any functionality by itself? At the most basic level, if I put my iPhone down and walk away, will the Watch still tell me what time it is?

  • If AT&T's CEO Is Right, Apple Is In The Perfect Spot. But Can It Keep The Lead? [View article]
I think that you have put your finger on an issue that Apple needs to leverage to the hilt; security. This is not just in payment processing, but in all ecosystems. As illustrated by the recent security breaches at Target, Neiman Marcus, and others, any time information is transmitted it provides a conduit for hacking. I have seen speculation on connected automobiles being hacked to make them inoperative or erratic, on externally programmable implanted medical devices being hacked and rendered inoperative, and so on. Security is in the forefront of all potential users of connected devices. Apple has an advantage in ensuring security because of the way their hardware and software are coordinated. If they can leverage this by developing further enhancements in their security, it will increase the desirability of all of their products and services.

  • Apple iPhone event underway; iOS 7 arriving on Sep. 18 [View news story]
I'm kind of surprised that the market wasn't more impressed with the fingerprint reader. Having been in the corporate world for many years, I would expect that they (as well as the government) would go crazy for it. Of course, that feature has been an open secret for a while, so it may already be priced in.

  • Apple (AAPL) is overhauling retail operations in preparation for "an army of new products this fall," says JPMorgan, noting recent comments from Tim Cook about "new incentives" to buy iPhones for both customers and Apple stores. Among the new products: iPhone 5S, 5th gen iPad, 2nd gen iPad mini, and a cheap iPhone. JPM takes note of the new programs for iPhones in conjunction with reports iOS7 beta runs extremely slow on older models - the iOS7 rollout could drive more customers than normal to upgrade to a newer i-device. Shares +0.6% premarket. [View news story]
You have to keep in mind that the release of iOS 7 doesn't render any devices unusable. Apple is certainly not going to stop supporting iOS 6 or otherwise make it impossible to continue using it. The worst case scenario is that you will keep iOS 6 until you buy a new device that allows you to run iOS 7.

  • General Motors (GM) exec Bob Ferguson thinks Cadillac sales can increase 30% this year as new models hit showrooms - including the 2014 CTS and 2014 plug-in ELR coupe. For the first time in a long while, Cadillac's lineup is broader than peers Mercedes, BMW, and Lexus. [View news story]
I am old enough to remember the time when Cadillac was the "Mark of Excellence" (and deserved to be). I would love to see it get that label back.
