  • Gilead Sciences: Strong Long-Term Growth At A Bargain  [View article]
    Excellent analysis!

Unfortunately, the U.S. is moving toward a country of socialism under Obama administration.

I agree with you that GILD should be a good buy at this time because the odds that the government will actually control the drug prices are slim.

  • Gilead Sciences: Strong Long-Term Growth At A Bargain  [View article]
Does anybody remember the reason why GILD just had a major correction? The congress issued a letter implying possible price caps that could be imposed by the government due to the high prices of GILD products. If GILD cannot set the prices freely for Atripla and Sovaldi, the earnings growth potential for GILD will be limited. The government's intervention due to Obama Care's cost concern is a major threat to me if I want to hold GILD for the long term.

  • Back To Reality: No, J.C. Penney Did Not Beat Earnings (In Fact It Has New Problems)  [View article]
When a defined benifit pension plan makes higher returns than that under the previous acutuarial assumption, an amortization of this "surplus" can be used to reduce the sponsoring company's pension liability. This reduction of the company liability can be viewed as an "income" which increases the firm's equity. If the company's financial director decides not to reduce the firm's pension liabilities using this "surplus", the company can increase its assets, such as a higher deferred asset to balance its higher equity. The reason why this asset is labeled as a deferred "tax" asset is beyond my understanding though.

  • Spreadtrum Q4 Earnings Preview: Expect A Beat, Positive Roadmap For 2012  [View article]
SPRD prices dropped 20%+ after the earnings announcement and the weak management guidance. I wonder whether the management shorted the stocks before they lowered their guidance on Feb 29.

  • Stocks To Own And Stocks To Avoid To Profit From China's Growth - An Interview With China Expert Shaun Rein, Part 1  [View article]
China as a whole is growing between 8% and 10% a year in terms of her GDP. Many public firms with heavy state equity ownerships could be making high profits if their accounting systems are as tight as their western peers. Most Chinese public firms' books cannot be trusted and a lot of cash leakages exist to benefit their management and government officials. When you study a Chinese firm's financial statements, you could actually reading a totally illusive novel written by the management. Therefore, don't over-expose your portfolio to Chinese firms. At least, you should not endorse the crooks' operations by buying their stocks.
