  • Memo To Apple Bears: Give Up For Now [View article]
Experienced and bloodied Apple investors know to respect this stock's pull backs. They can be fast and furious. It tanks in a minute what it goes up in hours. So the question is, when should we expect the pull back to happen? I do not think it will happen before Dec 18….CHL is not fully priced in, not by a wide margin. Then there will be the announcements of how many Iphones sold…This will run for 3 weeks more. It could consolidate a bit until then but a pull back? Tell me if I am wrong. Happy to commit new money with a April 2014 time horizon.

    tx so much.

can you enlightened me as to what an 'accelerated buy back' is? How can you have both the regular one and an accelerated one?

And how would the table look like if Google reported with GAAP, as Apple does?

  • Apple (AAPL +2.4%) rallies as the sell-side finds some encouraging data in the company's FQ2 10-Q (filed on Wednesday). Wells Fargo notes Apple has a net deferred gain of $517M related to cash flow hedges, and expects this to benefit gross margin by 150 bps in the coming quarters. It also points out FQ2 GM would've been 38.4% (rather than 37.5%) if not for a product warranty accrual. BMO, meanwhile, argues the 10-Q makes Apple's FQ3 GM guidance of 36%-37% look conservative. Today's gains come even as Cirrus Logic, which got 85% of its March quarter sales from Apple, falls thanks to cautious remarks about FY14 growth. [View news story]

  • Samsung (SSNLF.PK) strengthened its lead as the world's top vendor of mobile phones and of smartphones in Q1, IDC estimates. The South Korean giant increased its market share in the latter category to 32.7% from 28.8 a year earlier and shipped more smartphones than the next four providers combined. Apple's (AAPL) share slipped to 17.3% from 23%. The global cellular phone market grew 4% on year to 418.6M devices, with smartphones outshipping feature phones for the first time. [View news story]

  • Apple's March Quarter Madness [View article]
Paul, tx a lot, everything makes sense to me except:

'For the March quarter, management has guided to revenue of between $41 billion and $43 billion. I expect revenue in the current quarter to slightly exceed the top range of guidance.'

Do not see MAC sales making up for much lower iph5 sales. I see revenues slightly below guidance. Then all your numbers fall apart, even with higher gross margin. Tx

  • Apple (AAPL) has paid $20M to acquire Silicon Valley start-up WifiSLAM, which develops ways for mobile apps to identify a user's whereabouts in a building using Wi-Fi signals. The technology can enable new types of retail and social networking apps, and would allow Apple to match Google in offering indoor mapping in places such as airports and shopping malls. Meanwhile, Apple had to temporarily shut down its password reset system on Friday due to a security flaw. [View news story]
Tx, I received on Saturday a software update to fix that 'security flaw'. That says a lot about the quality of Apple's services.

  • Apple (AAPL) isn't illegally bundling proposals within its proxy since this only happens when proposals are combined in a way "that puts shareholders to an unfair choice," the company states in a response to David Einhorn's suit - Apple's Prop. 2 features 3 changes to the articles of incorporation, one of which relates to preferred stock. Apple also accuses Einhorn of trying to coerce the company into issuing preferred stock for his own benefit, and (in talks with management) of viewing shareholder approval as a "roadblock." (Einhorn's letter) (more[View news story]
Disagree, preferred shares is a powerful enough instrument to warrant shareholders approval. Most of the time, preferred shares are issued to save management from past mistakes or to save their skin. Apple is doing the right thing.

  • Brazil's National Institute of Industrial Property yesterday denied Apple's (AAPL) request to register the iPhone trademark in the country, as electronics maker IGB Eletronica already owns the rights to the name. Apple won't have to immediately suspend iPhone sales, but it faces a potentially lengthy and costly legal battle in what has become a fast-growing market. [View news story]
Gradiente Electronica registered the "iphone" name in 2000, seven years before Apple launched its popular smartphone.

  • The Mysterious Case of Apple's Missing Growth [View article]
Robert, can you explain why the number of shares issued actually increased in last quarter? Why did they not buy back those shares? Any technical or legal reasons? Were those shares not issued under option exercise programs? Tx
