  • ADP revisions slash job gains [View news story]
Pretty horrible 3 months with missed estimates and downward revisions.
But wouldn't surprise to see the "Unemployment rate" stay the same or drop below 7.3 % with ever growing "stopped looking" folks conveniently not counted.
Almost only thing Joe Public sees is the one number and doesn't know those millions who "no longer look" conveniently don't even count anymore.

  • We All Make Many Mistakes, What Do We Do Next? [View article]
Two classy and capable individuals above, Scott and Bob.

I continue following both of you with interest and as a large shareholder of AGNC and other mREITs find Scott the most informed, conscientious, and thorough voice on that name on SA.

Bob, your articles are always some of my favorite and while you're well ahead of me in investing I guess one of the reasons I like you so much is many of the names you hold interest me as well.

Followed your writing on BBL for around a year now and never took a position.

Can you offer an opinion on opening one in BBL now ?

  • We All Make Many Mistakes, What Do We Do Next? [View article]
Bob, excellent article. Thanks for sharing. Always enjoy your fine work.
I'm 60 y/o MD and own AGNC, several other mReits, LNCO, KMI among others like what you've written about.
Of the buy, sell or hold options I'm holding and reinvesting the dividends of these names.
LNCO reached 32.37 this morning. IF the Berry deal concludes successfully 40 is a realistic number.
Wish someone gave us all a crystal ball but aint happening.
Your wisdom and judgement is superior and I look forward to your next contribution to my learning process.

  • Linn Energy, LinnCo surge on apparent progress in Berry buyout [View news story]
Cautiously optimistic here on this potentially very good news. Everyone who follows Linn closely knows with the closing of the Berry deal the name could/should move up sharply from here toward $40 a share.
Hoping management of both Linn and Berry are burning the midnight oil (pun intended) moving things forward for domestic energy strength for decades to come.

  • Initial Jobless claims at 336K [View news story]
You guys are right about Lowes and HD and some other housing sector names. Seemed to have nice beat of very low estimated earnings with mortgage rates the way they were. But with rates rising sharply wonder where that might lead.
Noticed a lot of homes sold in the recent report were in "multiunit" situations and not really too good for new individual homes.
Builders in my area are not busy at all.
Recent employment numbers heavily skewed by low paying service sector jobs with poor or no benefits. Not good jobs to support a family and build a nest egg.
Wells Fargo just announced lay off of large (thousands) number of their mortgage business because mortgage loan business declines.
Cisco too with 4000 lay offs and downward guidance.

  • Initial Jobless claims at 336K [View news story]
Walmart misses low estimates and states bad economy and lowers forecast.
    Target same.
Sears, Staples, etc same and plunging earnings.
Look at the labor participation at worst since something like 50 years ago. Takes that many people "no longer looking" and receiving benefits to keep the unemployment number where it is rather than 10-12 %
Unemployment is a huge problem in this country..... but if enough drop out and "don't participate" can keep the number that's reported in the 7 % range for long time.
Heck, if almost all presently unemployed "stop looking" the way we measure it might get number to nearly 0 %

  • Welcome To Bottomsville: mREITs Offer 25% Returns [View article]
    CV

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. ALWAYS appreciate your wisdom, especially on mREITs and MLPs.

David White just wrote a piece on ARR and was a tad bullish with this paragraph exerpted:

"The-two year chart of ARR is near the beginning of this article. Both the slow stochastic and the relative strength sub charts show that it is neither overbought not oversold. The main chart shows that it is in a strong downtrend. However, it is likely that downtrend has bottomed, at least for the near term. This makes ARR a good investment for the near term at its current price."

Does his article shed any additional light on things that might be helpful to us average joe investors ?

  • More on CYS Investments (CYS) Q2 earnings: The company puts together a neat table of how agency MBS prices reacted to Fed actions during Q2, noting sharp drops in prices (and rises in yields) on the days of minutes releases and the June FOMC statement/Bernanke press conference. The volatility created "a dislocation between the value of our assets and hedges" Indeed. A must-read for all mREIT (REM) investors. At today's $8.89 close, the stock traded at a 12.7% discount to book value. CC tomorrow at 9 ET. Shares +2.2% AH. [View news story]
    REIT Analyst

Always truly appreciate your astute insights and "analysis." Hence your name.

Largest holding by far AGNC and wondering how their hedges were placed for Q2

  • New Unemployment Claims at 360K Much Higher Than Forecast [View article]
Thanks Doug for reporting your incredible analysis and insights into these numbers.
Do you foresee the weekly adjusted unemployment numbers drifting back up a bit to over 400,000 in the weeks and months to come ?
Does it seem to you the financial and general media have been unusually quiet about the significant miss for this weeks numbers ?
Thanks again for keeping us informed on these matters...... from a fellow North Carolinian.
