  • 3 Long Buys You Will Never Regret - Part 2 [View article]
"Currently, the company has around 1 billion mobile users in China." just curious if you are referring to Apple or China Mobile. It reads to me as if this refers to Apple. I do not know actual number of Apple users in China but according to World Bank China population is 1.344 billion, what would mean that nearly everybody that can read in China is already using Apple... 1 billion Apple users may seems a just a tad high...

  • Can You Still Own Apple? [View article]
China Telecom is a junior player in China market. China Mobile is likely what counts. I visit China 1-2 per year and happened to be there during iPhone 5 launch. No visible excitement, nothing like a year ago. I know, I know, Chinese are buying online now and there was a pre-order system, blah, blah, blah... A short trip to Apple store reassured me that the excitement is nowhere near last year level. Last year you could not stick your finger into an Apple store, this year plenty of space at the tables - looks like some Chinese lost the zest for fiddling with Apple devices. So I hopped over to a Starbucks next door and "conducted" another unscientific test - I looked around and this year there were just as many Galaxies as iPhones, but, yes iPad was absolute king. I made similar observations on Beijing subway. A friend of mine told me that whoever wanted an iphone already has it, so I would not bet a farm on mind blowing sales increase once a rumored China Mobile contract is signed. Yes, I am convinced a stock will pop initially but would the CM iphone sales figures live up to expectations, that is another question. For one thing China Mobile 4G network is TDMA, there is currently no iphone accommodating this technology. I bet it is not a big deal to add it however it may take some time to rump up production so initial sales after announcement will not be huge one way or another and may disappoint a few analysts and when analyst get disappointed we now know all too well what follows...

  • Apple Investors' Greatest Weakness [View article]
Most people have contracts so they pay around $200 for an iphone... that is not that different from the comparable (spec-wise) droids...If market drives prices down, the droids should suffer more than Apple who managed to maintain higher margins. If margins are slashed by half many droid manufactures will have to close the shop while it could be just a hick-up for Apple... At the end the market left by exiting manufactures will be split by the best, and chances are Apple will be among them... What this will do for Apple stock is a separate story both short term and long term.

  • With The New iPad, Apple Accelerates; With The iPad Mini, It's Pedal To The Metal [View article]
Just fyi on mini screen resolution - apparently providing a screen with resolution like nexus or kindle have would require rewriting apps specially for mini so the decision was made to use screen resolution that would take advantage of existing apps without a need to rewrite anything.

I did upgrade from iPad 2 to 3 but only after going to Apple store and visually assessing both screens next to each other and seeing an amazing improvement (in detail and contrast). Shamefully I have to admit - I did not count the pixels;-) Retina display was such a huge improvement that a naked eye could tell without pixel counting. I bet that the same naked eye could not tell the difference in pixel count in iPad mini, Kindle or Nook and images and text would look fairly similar. At this point other factors would come into play in decision making. Christmas sale number will tell us if pixel counting and $20 matters.

  • More on Apple's shakeup: Internet software/services chief Eddy Cue will be in charge of Maps and Siri. Design chief/legend Jony Ive will now also be responsible for "human interface" for Apple's products. Bob Mansfield, recently convinced to cancel his retirement plans, will head a new Technologies unit that will include all of Apple's wireless hardware and chip teams. A search has begun for a retail chief to replace Browett; Tim Cook will head retail in the interim. Federighi's promotion could bring additional moves to "harmonize" iOS and Mac OS. • Amazon Calls Out The iPad Mini: Is Apple Running Out Of Steam? [View article]
"Apple was not the first on the scene with a 7"-class tablet..." - I am not sure if Apple was first to anything nor that being first to market is a prerequisite to success. Apple not being first to the market was still able to outdo the competition products by leaps and bounds and rack handsome profits at that. There was Rio long before iPod was conceived... There was Sony P900 with plethora of apps four years ahead of iPhone's birth.... And there was Tablet PC too, yet all these things ended up in a dust bin (to be fair along with my Newton;-) the moment iThings arrived.

  • What's All The Hubbub About Over The iPad Mini Pricing? [View article]
From what I gather from several other posts by this poster (Pirota), he/she owns Dell computer, HTC phone and Galaxy Tab and extols virtues of this combo and its superior specs. It appears that he/she does not own any Apple stock nor products and his/hers only experience with Apple products may have been derived from watching Samsung commercials. His search for recognition and attention might be better served on Samsung/droid forums.

  • Apple's Cash Position Is Overstated By $70 Billion [View article]
Other readers provided a lot of valuable input, but I personally like number crunching. According to investopedia:

Working Capital = current assets - current liabilities. I usually use dailyfinance.com to quickly lookup the numbers.

"Its working capital of inventories, payables and receivables are minus USD 8.1 billion" . When I do the math according this definition, I constantly come up with positive $18-20 billion in working capital. Could you please reveal how you calculate your working capital number?

"Apple is completely financed by suppliers". I find receivable and payable actually showing slight downward trend thru last 4 recent quarterly financial statements, with payable exceeding receivables by roughly $2 billion consistently from quarter to quarter. The $2billion is the only number that I would count as "stealth financing" from suppliers... There is a chance this situation can be simply explained by payable and receivable terms....

Please let me know where I made a mistake in my back of the envelope calculation...

There is also a statement about misclassified items in Apple financials. I feel that such high profile statements are highly scrutinized and auditors most likely would not let that mis-classifications sneak in....

@ buckshop - it comes likely from India, but comforting news for both the Dell/HTC combo user and Apple investor is that they over there in India "understand your frustration":-)

  • Apple Should Take The $199 Chinese Smartphone Seriously [View article]
Copying shamelessly Apple products Samsung left Apple no choice whether "frightened" or not. I for one thing am glad that somebody finally stood up to these intellectual property impudent thieves from Asia and elsewhere and was not frightened by the "political correctness", fear of offending our Asian "friends", etc. In contrast, look at GM where Chinese company ripped off a whole car based off stolen blueprints (BTW from GM Korean factory) to the point where ALL parts are interchangeable! (Google Chevy Cherry vs. QQ) and what GM did? Throw up in the towel and did nothing for the fear of offending its important market...

BTW, when Chinese company copies other company product, they are labeled "intelectual property thieves", but when Korean company does the same thing, they are merely "inspired"...

Just one comment on "Chinese prefer to buy from Chinese companies"... Living 9 years in China I did not get that impression, however my experience is limited only to dumb phones, air conditioners, household appliances, clothing, cars, baby food, alcohol, fast food, and TVs...
